Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. gets full season order. ABC has picked up the back nine for a full season of 22 episodes.

ABCís Tuesday night heroes are sticking around for a full season as Marvelís Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is getting a full season order. ABC has picked up the back-nine episodes to round out a full traditional 22-episode season.

Jelly just posted this TVLine article on the same topic.

As I commented earlier this week, the back-9 pick-up announcement was imminent, and it did happen.

Yay

It is our first full season show since Angel Season 5.

To the surprise of no one. :-)
When are we likely to find out if it gets a second season? Do renewal announcements come early or not til close to the end of the first season?
YES YES YES YES!
They will probably hold off on season two pickup until there's more ratings data.

Well deserved. Want to see where they go with this.
Good. Something less to worry about. And congrats to cast and crew.
Everybody panic, it got a full season!
@sab39 Shows usually get picked up for another season between March-May time so still some time to go.
Can't wait for the panic next spring about the second season. :)

For those wondering why Sleepy Hollow did get picked up for a second season already it's because it only has 13 eps a season like a cable run versus the 22-24 eps a season that AoS will have.

I hope the pick up gives Joss, Jed and Mo the chance to write a season arc and a more mythology driven back half of the season, and at the same time spreads good buzz about the longevity of the show again.
Great news and perfect timing with the panel this weekend at NYCC.

I did the Dance of Joy. Here's to a memorable first season!
It's the first full season pickup of Whedon show since 2004. (In fact, I think 2003?)

Thank You Jesus ! ! !
( . . . as my mother would say.)
This is my kind of canceled. So happy that J-Mo & Jeff Bell & Jeph Loeb & Joss & Sundry get to stretch out and develop the extremely fascinating who's-the-villain-here-really dynamic they've ignited. And that the characters will have much more time to breathe and evolve and get in serious trouble. Of course, a meteor could destroy the earth tomorrow. Just being realistic here.

Oh, yay for everyone involved! I'm so happy that they're finding success.

Bummed to say that I can't get into it, AT ALL. But that's just me -- wishing it big audiences, and wishing those who love it great fun.
Good. So can we stop messing around and have the show become S.H.I.E.L.D. dealing with Moon Knight and Cloak and Dagger in several episode arcs in context with AIM/Hydra as the big bad?
I'm more worried with the fact that it's not very good...
I hope they start building major arcs asap. It would help take it to another level.

I understood none of that sentence.
I hope this means they'll stop trying to make the show super family friendly and get to the interesting part. I really want to love it, and it pains me to say that it's barely average for now.
Pollaxt, the thing is, jed and Maurissa have said that it's not totally up to them to decide what characters or organizations from the Marvel Universe to use. They might be off limits for the Phase Two movies.
To coin a popular Sunnydale phrase...
It may not be that good... yet, but this will certainly give J-Mo, Bell & Co. time to step it up and Joss it up so we will eventually have what we all hope: A show we need to see.
While expected, it's nice to get confirmation, and hopefully Team SHIELD can begin converting the "if we go forward" plans into actual long view story arcs we can invest in

Kudos to all involved -
Great news! I also heard somewhere that Titus Welliver is gonna reprise his role as Agent Blake from the Item 47 short movie so that's also kinda cool.

Nice. Coulson is going to need a lot more suits.
Joss & Jeffrey Bell did some amazing things the last time they had 22 eps (another season that got off to a weak start, now that I think about it). Excited to see what J-Mo bring to the equation.
It can be both interesting and family friendly, one does not exclude the other, just like Doctor Who is a children show that became an all-ages entertainment.
Shiny! And I like Pollaxt's thinking.
What I think is even better is that , knowing that they have a full season, they could try some tings they might not have been willing to try. Though I have no clue what that might be. :-)
Good! Now they have plenty of time to let Ron Glass in on some of the action.
Congrats to all involved.

Oh, and I echo what pollaxt said.
Do we know what episode is currently in production? Episode 9 or something?
I think 7? I'm wondering when we'll start getting breaks.
They were shooting 7 when the show started airing.
They could do the entire initial 13 this year (right up until Dec 17), assuming they have their big mid-season cliffhanger/Tahiti in episode 13 and not a bit sooner. But wouldn't that be quite uncommon for a big network show to run uninterrupted until Xmas? I'd assume if that were to happen, there'd be a loooong break until late February or something so they could then stretch it out until the end of April/early May. I already know whatever the break is and when it is, it'll come after some big WTH!!! and it'll be torture. :D
I think a repeat of the pilot is already planned for 10/29. Then we'll get 3 weeks in a row for November sweeps. Possible it will be pre-empted for 11/26 because ratings tend to be depressed Thanksgiving week. Then maybe a couple eps in December but it may not be back until January. So eps 8 to maybe 10 will have aired in this calendar year and they will have 7 to run mid January through February sweeps and another 5-7 to run April through May sweeps.

Yes there will be a hiatus. Possibly several.
Hopefully this allows them to get more daring.
What will be interesting, IrrationliTV, will be to see how the international networks handle it. In the UK, we aren't used to hiatus. They tried airing repeats of ER years ago here, and nobody got it, causing the ratings to fall off a cliff.
This is great news! While I like it (definitely don't love it), I think it's improving. The tone in the third episode evened out a little more, the humor worked (mostly), and the plot had good pacing.

And I think what Film Crit Hulk tweeted about it was pretty dead on. He said (and if you're not familiar, he tweets in all caps full time):

OKAY! 3 EPISODES IN WITH S.H.I.E.L.D. THE PROBLEM ISN'T SO MUCH THAT THE SHOW DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IT IS YET...
IT'S THAT IT DOESN'T KNOW WHAT IT DOES WELL YET. THAT TAKES SEEING FULL EPISODES WHILE STILL WRITING NEW ONES.
SO HALF WAY THROUGH THIS SEASON SOON WE'LL START SEEING THE ADJUSTMENTS. WHEDON SHOWS TYPICALLY DO VERY WELL AT THIS.
AND THERE'S ENOUGH FLASHES OF ALL THE GOOD STUFF TO DEFINITELY HOLD OUT HOPE. ALSO, CLARK GREGG IS A ROCK.

And then he replies to a comment from a user who said "too little too late":

IT'S 3 EPISODES. LIKE 7 OF THE FIRST 13 EPISODES OF BUFFY ARE BAD AND IT BECAME ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS EVER.

That does throw a wrench in things, gossi. ABC may have to adjust that next season. But that reluctance to deal with hiatus is what causes international territories to usually get shows late. It's one or the other. Either same time and deal with hiatus(es) or get it late and run straight through.
I think (no knowledge, haven't asked) they may split the season in two, to avoid going into repeats, Revolution style.
And that would mean a minimum of a 2 1/2-3 month hiatus. Could happen. I'd rather get them doled out with short breaks but I know people differ on this and international needs are going to be more important with this show than most other network dramas.
