Sarah and Freddie to opt out of Scooby Doo 3? Zap2it article strongly implies that neither has yet signed on for the third film in the franchise. Also contains rumors of bad behavior on the set of Scooby Doo 2.

Interestingly, the carefully-worded article never comes out and says directly that SMG and Prinze won't be back, but instead lists all the other folks who have been confirmed, making the two conspicuous by omission. Wonder if this caution is for legal reasons?

Gosnell was surprised to discover that Freddie Prince Jr., playing Fred, wasn't giving interviews to Internet press, and Sarah Michelle Gellar, who plays Daphne, wasn't talking to any press for Scooby.

I suggest Mr Gosnell checks out the new issue of SFX which has SMG on the front cover and a major interview with her about Scooby Doo 2 (there's a Freddie interview as well - ok that isn't the internet press but it's still an interview). And isn't Sarah currently filming a new movie in Japan at the moment?

Sources on the "Scooby 2" Vancouver set have told Zap2it that the real-life couple Gellar and Prince were demanding of the crew and uncooperative with press invited to the set during filming.

Well judge for yourself how uncooperative she is.

I found those assertions about her refusal to speak to the press to be peculiar as well, particularly in light of the post three down from this one about SMG's upcoming appearance on the Ellen Degeneres show to promote the new film. Kind of brings the credibility of the rest of the article into question....
It's just media bs laid down to perpetuate the myth that SMG is a snob. It's that kind of ink that sells papers or brings in hits in this case, and if they turned around and said "Sarah Michelle Gellar - Human being like you and me - neither extremely nice or extremely cruel" it would be boring for them, so they have to spice things up, of course.

Celebrity media is so transparent.
Tittle tattle sells copies and the obsession with celebrities seems to have got far worse in the UK over the last few years.
Normally, I have enjoyed reading most zap2its articles and found them to be quite credible over the years. I do, however, find this article rather dubious. Freddie may not have done interviews with internet journalists, but he has done several with print and on-camera journalists like ET. It is an actor's own choice, as to what journalists he will grant personal exclusive interviews towards. The journalist in question also did an interview with Matthew Lillard and the actor did not seem all that pleased with the journalist's take on questions. As Matthew Lilliard and Freddie Prinze, Jr. are very close friends. I would not doubt that certain opinions, as to what journalists to meet, may be shared between the two actors.

The comment about SMG not making interviews for Scooby Doo 2 is a pure fabrication. In Part 3 of the Chud interview, with Smiling Jack Ruby, he states that she was doing SD2 interviews in early March. SMG may not be doing interviews for the North American market at the moment, but she was definitely doing SD2 interviews in Asia. SMG missed a interview with Ryan Seacrest on Friday, as she had yet to return to America. The wrap party for The Grudge occurred on Wednesday. For, unknown reasons, her return flight was scheduled to stop in London prior to arriving in LA.

No word has occurred as to whether or not the two actors will be returning to SD2. The producers of SD3 are planning to move the movies towards more of a franchise concept, which means, that very little character development will occur to the characters of Fred or Daphne in the future. If this is the case, SMG is better off pursuing other acting projects. There is a significant rumour that SMG has a dramatic project slated for filming in May.

Unfortunately this type of slanted article just feeds fuel to the fire of SMG haters. I am an SMG fan. I do not like the bashing that goes on towards her. I would also dislike anyone to bash any of the other Buffy/Angel actors or writers. Generally, I like all the actors and writers of the Buffy/Angel verse. I have no desire to promote one actor's "supposed" character attributes over another. Everything is relative, and I, as a simple fan, did not have to work with these people for seven years. I am not privy to their motives or intentions. When I see an article that I know is not true it hurts me. That is why I am posting here to set the record straight.

Lilliard interview:

Actually, I think this would be good. SMG and Prinze seemed like unnatural choices for the two roles. Lillard and Cardellini are very close to their cartoon counterparts, but SMG and Pirenze just seem crowbarred into the roles - Prinze in particular. They just never suited the roles in my humble opinion - so I think this will improve the franchise if they don't sign up.
Marc Blucas is the living Fred, folks. Let's face it.
yeah.....this report seems shady. who knows why they havent signed on to a third movie yet, and im sure there is a good reason. especially since the second movie hasnt even came out yet, why should there be a hurry. and i have also read the other SMG interviews about scooby doo. she seems perfectly open to talking about it..........owell
Downplaying the importance of specific actors could be the studios letting them know they don't need them and can happily do SD3 without them. Could be they are asking for more money and the studio don't want to pay. Or the studio think they don't want to do another movie and want to make it clear they can manage without them. Remember the WB running down Buffy when it became clear that they could lose the show? They didn't want to be seen trying to keep the show and failing, better to pretend they're not bothered.

And Blucas IS Fred! JASBSB proved it!
I agree...Fresh of his role in The Alamo, Blucas should sign on as Fred! Additionally, I think that Marc is a cool guy and I hope to see him in more roles....
And as for SMG appearing on Ellen's show...actors go on daytime television with the intention of promoting their careers just as much as whatever their current project happens to be...
Simpleba - Actually Marc Blucas is going to be in MI3 before he can think of concidering SD3. :)
I disagree that SMG doesn't fit the role of Daphne, I thought she was quite good in it but I strongly agree that Freddie Prinze Jr. stood out like a sore thumb and that Marc Blucas would've been perfect in the role. As for this article being accurate, well it's obvious it is just trying to make a big deal out of nothing. Obviously they are going to do interviews and promote the movie. Not because they have to but because it is good for their careers if the movie is a success. And it is normal to make the rounds by going on all the talk shows, daytime and nightime and doing lots of interviews.

As for a Scooby three, I honestly think all actors could be replaced accept for maybe Lillard who does a fantastic job as Scooby but I would think if they can get all the original cast for the 3rd movie they'd prefer doing that. It just makes better business sense to stick with the original team of actors because children like continuation. Of course, if they can't get all "four" (because, frankly, you aren't going to have just SMG or Freddie, it would be both or neither) I think kids would be accepting if it was the same Shaggy. I think LC has done a great job as Velma but they could put that wig, outfit and glasses on any petite actress and they aren't going to look too different.

And let's face it, there has already been a lot of good buzz out for "The Grudge" so maybe SMG is hoping she'll have other offers and doesn't want to commit too soon to Scooby 3 because she wouldn't want to turn something else down.
Lillard who does a fantastic job as Scooby

Poor Matthew.....people think he's the dog!!
Actually, Linda's hair in the movie is really her hair, not a wig. But yes, they could easily put a wig on someone else, though I think she's done a perfect portrayal of Velma and it might be hard to get someone just as capable.

With recent reports that SMG and Freddie don't want to work together anymore, it's completely plausible that one or the other would decide to sign on by themselves.

As far as the actors, I didn't think they did a bad job in the first one. I think Daphne as a character was written a little more dumbed down than the original series. But with the more recent animated movies, and even looking back on Pup Named Scooby Doo, that's what her character has become. As far as Freddie playing Fred... I didn't think it was really that bad. I agree they could have cast someone better, but there certainly could have been worse. Fred was always my least favorite character anyhow, so maybe I just wasn't too picky with his performance.

Lilliard makes Shaggy. I really don't think there's anyone else that could pull it off so smoothly.

As far as anyone returning... you can only do so many movies for a series before it stops being taken the slightest bit seriously. If they continue much further with the franchise, there will definitely be some recasting involved. And I would also think it would become a direct-to-video endeaver. Much like the Land Before Time movies. They've created so many of those, that they just stopped numbering them. So I'm not the least bit surprised if SMG and Freddie want to jump ship now before the movies are taken as more of a joke than they currently are by some. I personally enjoyed the first one, but I have a love of bad movies so my opinion is always a strange one. :)

BTW - Just wanted to point out that James Gunn wrote both Scooby Doo 1 and 2. Charles Gunn was given that name after Joss worked with both James and his brother Sean, who was in two episodes of Angel season one and now plays Kirk on Gilmore Girls. I'm not sure what James did on the show, though. Anyone know?
He played two different characters. He was a demon in "Hero", and Jhiera's (human) assistant in "She".
LOL, I meant Shaggy! He's got the voice down so good that I'd have to compare it to the cartoon (which I haven't seen in years) but I really think he's the best part of the movie (except for Scooby). I honestly don't think they could replace him. He even looks like Shaggy with or without costume!

As for Linda being replacable, I'm going to take back what I said earlier about that because I've since read an interview with her where they talked about her audition for the part and how she was the only one who totally got into both the voice and the mannerisms of Velma. It mentioned they had interviewed loads of people for the part but she was the only one who captured Velma so well.

I honestly can't see SMG doing the movie without Freddie. In interviews together they talked about what an obsessed Scooby Doo fan he was and it always made me think she took the part because of him.
I remember something that was once related to me by someone about her kids and that TV show 'Blues Clues.' The show has a human host who was eventually replaced by somebody who kinda looked like him. And the kids never knew the difference. So it occurs to me that that may be the same case with the Scooby Doo movies if anyone is ever replaced. That a lot of the movies targer audience would barely even notice the difference.
Except probably for, I agree, Lillard. He has that part down.
Ah, I think these are probably great movies for kids, but I really don't like them because I grew up on the cartoon. When Velma was just a nerd, not a nerd hiding a hottie underneath. And Daphne wasn't quite so slutty and Fred wasn't quite so gay. And Shaggy and Scooby were always stoned. And the Harlem Globetrotters and Sonny and Cher came to help fight the baddies. That's Scooby Doo, people! This is just sacriledge!!
The show has a human host who was eventually replaced by somebody who kinda looked like him. And the kids never knew the difference.

Ok, and I'm ashamed that I know this, but I'm pleading Aunt-hood. In the 'story' of Blue's Clues, I think the host went away to college, and his 'little brother' took over. And trust me, my little 5 year old nephew would notice, but they put it in a way that it was okay for their to be someone new.

Ok, I wanted to check my facts and I came across this on the Nickelodeon website. It was just too funny:

**
How will Steve's departure be handled?
The Blue's Clues team has put together a series of three episodes that:

Give preschoolers time to get to know and like their new friend, Joe

Help explain Steve's departure

Give an inspiring look at Steve's future: college!

If you miss any of these episodes, it's okay, they'll be on again. Plus, the episodes were written to stand alone so you and your kids don't have to see all three in order to understand the overall story.

**

Maybe that's where the WB got the idea for standalone episodes! They think preschoolers watch Angel and that we can't follow an arc!!
lalaa - Those were both Sean's roles. I can't find anywhere what James did on the show, unless his work was all uncredited.

Rogue Slayer - You aren't alone. I actually knew the Blue Clue's story too. I blame my little sister. lol
I find it interesting that Scooby Doo 2 is being released in March instead of May or June as the first one was, from what I remember in the past movies that open prior to summer, in the spring, usually means the movie studio didn't quite like it, so they open them early before the big summer movies hit and take away their box office.

I agree with the other posters about SMG and Freddie Jr ad Daphne and Fred didn't fit, when I rented the first movie it seemed like SMG was playing more the Buffy type than a Daphne type, her fighting at the end of the film was very Buffy like.
The date I heard even before it was filmed was March which on that basis would mean they hadn't confidence before filming
Rogue Slayer- Well I guess it was just that person's kids then. Or, you know, as in most cases, I s'pose every kid is different.
And yeah, I used to watch 'Blues Clues-' I used to fall asleep watching Nick at Nite, and when I woke up in the morning it would be kids shows like 'Blues Clues' that I would watch while trying to wake myself up more. I was dissapointed when Steve went away.
Hmmm, maybe it's just me but I think it's bad when a 'professional' writer/interviewer incorrectly spells one of his subjects' name. Was he referring to Sarah and The Artist Formerly Known As (Prince)? :) Or is he having a dig at Freddie?

As for the 'demanding' behavior on the set, I can't comment on it since I was there. But I read a quote on smgfan.com's SD2 page about Sarah bringing in a large screen TV so the crew and cast could watch American Idol on the set. This is from the official production notes. Of course, this might not mean much but I figured I'd throw that in anyway.
My main surprise about the Scooby Doo movies is that even though SMG is Daphne, Velma was somehow hotter than her! How could that be! I got SMG in high boots and yet somehow I kept looking at Velma! And she had some scenes in the first one where....well, let's say there was more 'bounciness' involved than I would've thought suitable for a kid's movie!

And now I see in the second one that Velma wears a red leather catsuit.....and suddenly I may actually see it!

I realize I am a nerdy perv.....
The release date is designed around spring and Easter break for elementary schools student. That is why Cody Banks openned March 12th and Disney's Home on the Range is openning April 1st. That way the frazzled parents have something to take the kids to.

Although the first film had many major flaws, I really did enjoy it as mindless eyecandy, the kids love it. I actually have watched the deleted scenes in the DVD and Raja Gosnell and Richard Suckle actually did a really good commentary track of the whole production. Raja Gosnell was really very complimentary of SMG's role in the shot film, and seemed a little disappointed that in the final cut most of her character scenes were deleted in order to accomodate the requests of test audiences. Ironically, the DVD version is actually a much better movie if your mind fills in the deleted scenes and puts them where they belong. EW gave the movie a D while the DVD got a B-.
