Tom Whedon passed away yesterday. Jed Whedon posted the news to Instagram and we'll let that post speak for itself. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

ETA: Deadline has a nice piece on his career.

His page on IMDb, in case you didn't already know he was writer on a bunch of stuff a lot of us grew up on before we knew what a Whedon was.
Love and condolences to the whole family.
Condolences to the Whedon family.

In addition to his astounding TV career (thanks for the link, b!x), he's also the person who put Joss up back in his first days out in Hollywood. Dug up this quote from Joss, which I find pretty wonderful:

"At one point, because I was staying with my father, that's when my stepmother said, "Why don't you get a job as a production assistant, to get on a set like that while you're trying to breakthrough?" My father said, "Don't. Wait. You're going to get a job as a writer." Which was a huge vote of confidence—an extraordinary thing to say. So first job I ever had in the business was as a writer, and that's the only thing I did until I directed Buffy, and I was a director, too, and producer."

ETA: And another, from the same interview:

"You know, he didn't give me advice. He just loved them. I was shocked. I was really excited. That was a big thing, you know? ... I had always respected my father enormously, and seeing scripts of his that had never seen the light of day that were some of my favorite ones—I valued his approbation enormously. Didn't expect it. That gave me the courage to go on."

Thoughts and prayers for the Whedon family.
There are fewer beautiful words in the world today.
Reminds you to remember and treasure the ones that are left.
Condolence sent to the Whedons and their loved ones.
My sympathies to his family, and his friends and fans.
Heaven has just got itself another master wordsmith...a sad, sad day and my heartfelt condolences to the entire Whedon clan for their loss :(
I'm sorry, Whedon family. My sympathy to all.

This is a rough one to go through, though they already know that from losing their mom. The second parental loss makes you feel like a kite whose strings got cut. :(

My condolences to his wife, their step-mom, as well. She's always sounded like a pretty nifty lady, and my heart goes out to her.
Condolences to the entire Whedon clan. Is there a word for a collection or family of creative people? Seems like there should be one.

Condolences to the his family, friends and loved-ones.

Prayers and thoughts for your whole family and your friends during this time. May Mr. Whedon rest in peace.
Condolences to the entire Whedon family for the loss of the patriarch who undoubtedly excouraged all his children to follow their own creative dreams--while also giving the rest of us some quality entertainment.
My deepest condolences to the Whedon family.

I feel fortunate to have known the Whedon name years before Joss gave us Buffy, thanks to Tom's work on my other favorite TV show, The Golden Girls. Not only did Tom write some fantastic episodes of The Golden Girls, but he also wrote what is, in my opinion, the show's best episode—"The Case of the Libertine Belle."
My sympathies to the family and friends. It's so hard to lose a parent.
I grew up loving the dialogue on Benson and The Golden Girls. The world is worse off for Tom Whedon's passing.
My sincere condolences to all the Whedons.
Condolences to the Whedons.
He looks like such a nice man. Sincere condolences to the whole family at such a hard time.
My deepest sympathies to all the Whedon clan.
He gave so much joy to the world through his own talent and his talented children. My deepest sympathies to his loved ones.

Condolences to his family and friends.
I've added a link to Deadline's piece about him to the post.
Very sorry to hear of this. R.I.P Mr Whedon, and condolences to all the family..
I've lost my mom and dad too. It never stops hurting. But you all have warm wonderful memories to wrap you up at night. My sincerest condolences to your family.
Sorry to hear about the loss of the Whedon patriarch. Sending thoughts of comfort to the family. <3
My sympathy and thoughts are with the whole Whedon family. The world has lost a talented writer but they have lost a father, grandfather, husband. Thank you, Tom Whedon, for all the wonderful entertainment you gave us, even before most of us knew who you were, and thank you for giving us such talented offspring. The creative genes run strong in this family. Rest in peace, sir, you deserve it.
EXIT stage - right. Audience applauds. Fade to Black.
My deepest condolences.
All I can do is echo what has already been written here so well, and add my condolences. RIP, Mr Whedon.
When I lost my mom, I found so much comfort in watching "The Body." To know that I wasn't alone in my pain. Sure, I knew Buffy was fictional, but the person who WROTE that - wasn't fictional at all. He'd been through it and made it through to the other side. If he could do it, maybe I could, too. There is a comfort in the shared experience of loss. I wish I could extend the same comfort to Joss that he gave to me when I needed it most.
A sad day indeed. Condolences to all the family.
My deepest sympathies to the Whedon family.
This is such sad news, but also comforting to know he was surrounded by love when he passed away.
I feel honored to have been influenced and entertained (The Electric Company, Benson) by two generations of Whedons. Rest in Peace.
So sorry for their loss.
Very sorry to hear. My heart goes out to the whole family.
