A slayer's lineage: 9 pop culture precusors to Buffy. In honor of Buffy's 20th anniversary, The A.V. Club cites various works that influenced and/or paved the way for the show's creation.

Seems to me Kitty Pryde should be on that list.

Definitely. I think Joss has even acknowledged that she was a part of inspiration for Buffy.

It's also surprising that they talk about Die Hard but don't mention the reference to it in the title School Hard.
Yes, now that you mention it, I think I remember reading that. But when I first encountered Buffy, which was only when the DVDs started coming out, my first response to her character was that Buffy was the love-child of van Helsing and Kitty Pryde.
Buffy's also named after Cyclops.
Joss acknowledges an influence from the UK Avengers here .

Interestingly he names Steed as a greater influence than Emma Peel in that Steed had an influence on the character of Giles.
