(SPOILER) Whedon on ANGEL cliffhanger....?

yeah, almost 100% that Americana hasn't been picked up - poor aly

i would love an ongoing series of stand-alone telemovies, not related to continuing the angel story in any way as i like how that ends, but a couple of buffyverse ones would be nice, as would a couple of 'tales of the slayers' or a spike telemovie would rock, if it's with dru and set in some period of time where we haven't seen them before
Whedon also has said in the Toronto Star

"I do not think of it as a cliffhanger at all. It is not the end of all things. It is not a final grace note after a symphony, the way Buffy was. We are definitely still in the thick of it, but it is, and was meant to be, a final statement about Angel. ... The point of the show is, you're never done. Whoever survives the show, to get that point, will embody it, but no matter who goes on, the fight goes on.

"Did I make it so that it could lead into an exiting sixth season? Yes I did. But it still is a final statement, if that is what it needs to be."
I think Joss' version of a "cliffhanger" is just a bit different than yours or mine. I know the spoilers. That screams "cliffhanger" to me!

Evil Joss.
I haven't read the spoilers, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is another ending out there that has been kept a secret. They managed to keep the endings to 'Destiny' and 'You're Welcome' secret until the last minute...
A cliffhanger...I have mixed feelings about this. I mean a cliffhanger could possibly make the finale more interesting, and it is also a small disappointment to the fans. I guess we'll have to wait and see how it plays out...
DB on Regis & Kelly today said that there were "loopholes" left, and that Joss and Co. decided to end the series "their way," rather than the way the network wanted, which begs the question of what the network did want. He also provided a spoiler -- so the unspoiled should not watch a replay of the interview until after Wednesday.
The WB would probably have pitched something horrible like a cross-over with Charmed or something...
The WB probably wanted all the characters unequivocally DEAD so they would never have to worry about doing tele-movies...
I may have mentioned this before, but in previous seasons both for Buffy and Angel, Whedon purposefully left the finale both with finality and a sense that the story goes on. Season three of Buffy for example would have been a perfect way to end the series, with the destruction of the school, yet it was clear all the characters were moving on to college or other aspects of life. Season five of Buffy was quite final, and yet at the same time insisted upon the idea that despite the loss and sacrifice of a hero, life does indeed trudge forward and people learn to live with that loss, because the hardest thing about life is to live it. Dying's the easy part.

Even Buffy season seven was both a completeness of the Buffy internal character arc (still chosen but no longer alone) yet it was clear the Scoobies were far from done. Their future didn't look bleak but it also looked difficult. Whedon says in this approach that the journey is more important than the destination, and that just because we will no longer observe these characters, this doesn't mean they cease existing, if nowhere else but in our own minds and hearts. Or his.

At the risk of ticking someone off, it is my not so humble opinion that anyone who fails to understand or at least accept why Whedon might purposefully leave Angel season five both final and open ended, completely fails to grok Joss. I recommend looking at Restless again, several times if necessary.

If you still don't get it after that? I suppose I can't help you.
I was really scared to click on the comments for this link. Im trying to be unspoiled as I can for the last episode, and I thought if I read everyone's commennts here, I mightve seen something I didnt wanna.
Even though theres a "SPOILER" tag on the link for this article, and IMO, when it says "SPOILER" when posting comments nothing's off limits in regards to give-aways, just wanted to say a quick thanks to everyone (9 people) that posted and didnt give anything away for me.

PuppetCancer out
I for one consciously tried to be vague in my above response, even though the thread's clearly marked. Glad to see someone appreciated it. =) There's other stuff I wanted to say, about the symbolism and how the show's coming full circle visually, but I can't go into detail about that until after Wednesday.
To ZachsMind-Very good points about the buffyverse finales. Maybe the Angel Finale could give us partial, if not full, closure.
To brob1- I wouldn't doubt that the WB would propose such a horrible idea. The idea would have been interesting, but not this far into Angel. Also, both shows have completely different mythologies, it just couldn't work. God do I hate the WB!
Gio, it will be closure for the Angel character arc, but you might have to think about it. It's like what I said about Buffy seven, but instead of what it means to be chosen as a champion, Angel's journey has been about what it means TO CHOOSE to be a champion. I can't explain further than that until after Wednesday.

Yeah, but that would only prove that they had little understanding of the Jossverse -- as many fans have suspected -- as anyone can be resurrected.

But the overall quality of the show and the performances by the actors will ultimately have the same effect with respect to TV movies as killing off all the characters. My guess is that almost everyone will have post-Angel work, and ME would never be able to get them all together again, even if they were willing. (I'm flat-out amazed that Joss was able to re-assemble the entire ensemble cast of Firefly for Serenity.)
I think people respect joss both as a writer and as a director enough for them to jump at the chance of working with him again, that would explain the way he so easily re-assembled the firefly cast for serenity although I too thought of it as an amazing feat.

To quote joss on the finale of the series and I don t really think it will spoil anyone who has remained unspoiled ( and by the way kudos to you guys I don’t have that kind of restraint in me any more I did it for ‘chosen’ and it nearly killed me.) the end is about redemption and if there’s one thing we have learned from angel himself, redemption isn’t just for life…its forever.
again, even AFTER my last post, I wanna TY guys again. youve been very considerate.
Willowzbitch- believe me Im not that disciplined, this is the only one Ive managed
