Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed for "Southland Tales" in an interview with director Richard Kelly.

Well good for her landing the role, and starring in a movie directed by one of the hottest directors around at the moment. She can't go wrong with this one.
Do I understand Southland Tales to be a musical comedy?

Thus, will she sing? (Hell... will Kevin Smith sing?)
What exactly is this movie about? Is this the one that is supposed to be a musical? That's about all I know, I have no idea what the plot is supposed to be. It does sound like a promising role though. Hope The Grudge will be good and am looking forward to that one coming out.
Check out the website:

Southland Tales

for even less help on what this movie is about.
On whether Southland Tales is a musical, Richard Kelley said this in the above linked interview:

Well, it’s tough to describe the genre of the film. The best way I can describe it is it’s 30% comedy, 30% musical, 30% thriller, and 10% science fiction. And those percentage levels could fluctuate, to some degree, as we finish the final cut of the film. But there are musical sequences in the film, but it is not purely a musical. It is just as much a thriller, it is just as much a comedy, and it’s arguably just as much a science fiction film. It’s definitely a genre hybrid but somehow the musical thing got kind of blown out of proportion, and people just printed that it’s a musical. But it’s actually a hybrid of many different kinds of movies. I don’t know what it is about consumer culture but we want to be able to categorize everything.
Wow, what an excellent interview with one of the most exciting new directors around. Donnie Darko is one of my favorite films, and I'm thrilled that I'm lucky enough to live in Seattle where they'll be premiering the Director's Cut. I hope that Sarah really gets a chance to show her talent in her next film. Those of us who've seen her for 7 years as Buffy know what she's capable of, but so far her film work hasn't even come close to displaying her range.
Good for her and good for me. This is the second movie that I'm excited too see (The Grudge).
I think this goes to show that unless an actor really lucks out, it must be hard to take film roles based on what will fit into their summer haitus schedule. "The Grudge" and now "Southland tales" sound like good choices.

I only saw "Donnie Darko" once, late at night, but I remember really liking it and the fact that "Southland Tales" can't even be described is enough to recommend it.
Donnie Darko is my second favourite film ever (American Beauty is soooooo the best), and I loved Richard Kelly's weird direction, except for the widescreen angle it was shot at, that just annoys me. It was like a thin line in the middle of a black screen
Kevin Smith talked a little about the movie:

My part doesn't call for any singing. In fact, there seems to be this mistaken assumption that the flick's a musical. It's not. There's definitely singing in it, but it's not a musical. The singing in "Southland" is just something that happens during the course of the plot, as opposed to, say, in "Magnolia" - in which the singing is used in a more esoteric fashion, and seems to take place outside of the plot.
Well that's good. I mean I'm not one for musical's, after reading who's been cast I think this will definetely be one of Sarah's best films since "Cruel Intentions"....that kiss with Selma Blair...I have to go now.
I love Donny Darko and can't wait for the Director's Cut! I hadn't heard SMG was up for a part in this film, but based on Richard Kelly's past work I'm definitely stoked to see it. What a cool interview.

Those are the three biggest influences on “Southland Tales:” “Pulp Fiction,” “Brazil,” and “Dr. Strangelove.”

Especially if these are his influences. Sounds amazing. And wild.

I’m proud of the cult status badge of honor, but I also believe counterculture art invading the mainstream allows for more counterculture art to exist on a greater scale.

Yay for invading the mainstream! Let's hope Serenity is Joss's beachhead into a broader-based pop culture invasion, as for example. ;)
