Review Of Astonishing X-Men #1. Marc Mason of MoviePoopShoot.com takes a look at "the most high profile comics release of the year." There's also reviews at MediasharX, Cinescape and Silver Bullet Comic Books.

I've come across other reviews today which I thought posters might be interested in, so I've amended your post and added the three other ones.

I enjoyed the first issue. I liked the dialogue, I liked the first two page. Reminded me of 'Hush' for some reason. Must be the horror element. I'm not fond of Emma Frost but the way Joss has written her is impressive.

And I got a buzz from seeing Joss' name on the cover.
I'm actually pretty obsessed with Emma Frost, and I think that she has finally given Cyclops some depth after all of these years. He's finally a little more interesting because of his flaws, and Emma is almost like a light shining on them so we can see them better. Plus the wordplay between Emma and Kitty is priceless.
The more I hear how much Buffy fans are liking this comic, I just might have to get it myself. I've never read X-Men. Never really been into the superhero comics, actually. But I like the premise of X-Men, I just don't really know the characters that well.

Will Astonishing X-Men someday be available in TPB? If so, I think I'll wait for that.
Very likely that the first 6 issues (of his 12 issue run) will be available in TPB by Xmas. Knowing Marvel, tis more likely to be the first 4 issues. Hey they make more money that way.
electricspacegir i'm the same as you never been intrested in xmen and the first comic i ever read was fray, so i may also have to dive into the world of astonishing xmen simply because of joss whedon.
I've never really read any comics except Joss-related ones (some of the Buffy TPB written by the series writers, Fray, Tales of the Vampires), but I did pick up X-Men simply for Joss. I'm not even a fan of the movies, but I was quite the fan of this book. The dialogue sparkles and it immediately pulls in new readers without making things overly confusing. I definitely recommend that any Joss fan check it out, whether you're an X-Men fan or not.
You know there's so many good comic books out there at the moment, it's worth spending another 10 minutes in your local comic book shop looking around after you pick up 'Astonishing X-Men'. My personal favs at the moment are 'Fables', 'Y - The Last Man', and 'Sleeper'. Oh and anything Bendis, Millar and Ellis write. Particularly Ellis, my god he's an amazing writer.
I'm not sure I agree with the cut-and-dry comparisons of Buffy characters to X-Men characters stated in the first link, but I do definately see the similarities. And it's easier to see now why I ended up liking Buffy so much, being a fan of X-Men (mostly the cartoon) when I was little.

I'm thinking that I may have to hunt down a comic book store somewhere near me, but any buying plans have been hindered recently, due to my extreme unemployment. Does anybody know how long comics are usually left on the shelves?
it depends on the shop, really. i know mine will most likely manage to have astonishing x-men #1 in stock for a good year, or at least 6 months.
The comics I am more familiar with are the Fantagraphic ones. I can't remember all the names but one comic I collected for a little while was called Bitchy Bitch. Definitely not superhero stuff. I always thought that stuff was for boys and it never appealed to me...until I discovered that Buffy was a superhero. Buffy definitely changed my view on a lot of things.

And I've been reading Buffy comics, Fray, Tales of the Vampires, and I think it's time to venture into "boyland" and see what all the fuss is about. ;)
