"Did you ever see Buffy? It was dirty." The latest issue of New York Magazine interviews Joss about his run on Astonishing X-Men and its connections to and from the Buffyverse.

I don't know about "dirty", but it did push the envelope a bit...

Oh, wait a minute. Right...dirty...oh, yes, quite a bit at times!
Officially, any time a zipper is ratcheted to a microphone to make sure the foley guys get the point across, it's dirty. If a character is pushed against a pillar or wall at the time, then bonus dirtiness ensues.
What? I mean, I know curses in comics generally come out like "*&@#!!" but... nobody smokes or shows skin? What kind of prude comic doesnt show skin? Half the costumes on some of the X-Men hardly cover. And, I know for a fact that some of them surely smoke...

Color me confused. And a little dissapointed by any steps backward.
Funny thing, I've never heard the zipper. I know it happened because everyone said it did, including Marti, but I've never heard it, either on the first run, subsequent airings, or my video tape. Maybe I just need to crank up the volume next time. And oh yes there will be a next time. Heh.

numbereleven, I know! Wolverine chomps cigars all the time, and doesn't Beast smoke a pipe? Gambit's a cig-smokin fool! And really, as far as showing skin goes, the costumes themselves just look like colored (blue, yellow, various) skin. They don't leave anything to the imagination, so what gives?
Willowy - The zipper sound effect was edited out (along with about 30 extra seconds of material after B&S crash through the floor) at UPN's request.
Thanks InG for clearing that up, but then why did everyone talk about it immediately afterward?

I'm not questioning you, I'm just asking how did everyone KNOW? Was it what Marti said?

And is the full scene on the dvd? *runs to pop it in*
no way was the zipper edited out. i remember it distinctly. please tell me i'm not crazy.
I remember reading articles on how UPN asked for the zipper, among other things, to be edited out. I've seen the scene several times, and haven't heard anything other than dialogue, score music, kissing, panting, heaving, moaning, groaning, and a house falling apart.

But I suppose it's possible that the zipper sound is in there somewhere, but I've never heard it, and I've read (possibly on the BBC Cult Website?) that it was taken out.
IG, I've heard the zipper every time I watch Smashed. I know it's on the DVD.

And Willowy, if you're talking about the scene where after they fall through the floor, Buffy rides Spike (very dirty!), that was not in the episode but you can find it online. I have it on my computer.

I think you can find it on buffy.nu if you search under "smashed".

I haven't got the DVD's yet, so maybe they added the sound effect back for that?
I've also heard the zipper every time I've watched Smashed, though I've yet to watch the DVD. I'd imagine it's there too.
I've only seen "Smashed" on FX, and it's definitely on there. Maybe UPN's the only place it didn't end up. Wild.
Huh. I'll have to rewatch that scene carefully next time.
I heard the zipper. It were there in the great broad land of Au.

As for comics being dirty... ah... read Alan Moore's Watchmen. Sex, smoking, excessive violence... a complete deconstruction of the hidden ubermensch philosophy underpinning superheroes.

I suspect its one of the 'books Whedon is alluding to when he talk sabout deconstruction.
Hmmmmm, must be because I'm always on slow motion during that scene that I hadn't heard the zipper before . . .

It's been a long while, but I did download the deleted part of the ending from buffy.nu. Certainly makes the scene much dirtier. Not surprised it was edited.
The scene at the Bronze was even more erotic...my wife turned to me and said, "You can't see *anything*, and that's still the sexiest thing I've ever seen..."
Exactly when was Angel a lone brooding hero that later had a crowd set around him? Were there episodes before the first one I saw which had Doyle introduce himself and Angel run into Cordy at a party?
