Dingoes Ate My Baby. An interesting article on the inspiration for the beloved band's moniker. Not reading this is an offense punishable by booting ;) (reg. req.)

“A mystery that began nearly a quarter-century ago when nine-week-old Azaria Chamberlain vanished from the base of a totemic monolith in this continent's dead heart, continues not only to tantalise Australian imaginations but to permeate popular culture across the world.”

"possible inspiration"? I never really thought there was any doubt about it.
I assume that's where it came from, but I figured I'd play it safe :) Guess I didn't need to...
They made a movie about these events, Meryl Streep (picture her with dark short hair) played the part of the mother, Lindy, who is actually from New Zealand. To 'take the micky' out of this movie, the scene where Meryl Streep faces the camera and shouts 'A Dingo Ate My Baby' in a mock Kiwi accent, is always shown. I feel the name of the band came more from Meryl's cry, rather than the actual events. Clear as mud?

I've never seen the film myself, but the line is fairly well known, and Buffy is by no means the first or last show to quote it.
In a Seinfeld episode Elaine uses the line at a party, with accent and melodrama, when she wants to get out of a boring conversation.
Yeah, pretty common. I remember seeing a poster on a Buffy episode for a group called "String Cheese Incident." I was very surprised to find out that it was for a real band.
SCI are quite good. That reminded me of the other poster I saw in season 4 or 5, for Leftover Salmon. Just looked it up right now, and yup, real band.
