I hope it really does bride the gap somewhat. Obviously it won't be able to quite as well as however many episodes would've comprised the 6-to-8-months of the Firefly 'verse we missed out on...but if they don't skimp and they make it a little over an hour, they should be able to either produce a nice full episode or a collection of short Firefly films. If it's not too much of an issue to make more animated movies (assuming for a sec that this first one will actually happen and be successful), I wouldn't be against Joss and his writers finishing off Firefly Season 1 (only six or seven more episodes to go!) like that. The chances are slim-to-none that they'll ever get the chance to bring this thing back to television, but some straight-to-DVD animated films voiced by the cast? I see no reason why those wouldn't sell well, especially if Universal offered pre-orders to gauge interest.
Actually, come to think of it, does Fox's hold on the TV rights even extend to straight-to-DVD live action releases? 'Cause in theory, if Serenity is successful and Universal recognizes what they have on their hands, new episodes of Firefly could be released to DVD in the guise of DVD films.
