Joss Whedon on X-Men 3, Buffy and Angel. A brief interview at comingsoon.net. About.com has direct quotes from Joss about possible Buffyverse TV movies and those X-Men 3 rumors.

Very brief, but interesting especially regarding his X-Men 3 comment.

However, I hope Joss hears about Sarah's remarks at Comic-Con re a Buffy/Angel movie. She explicitly said she'd be interested in such a movie if the script etc was excellent. Since it would be if Joss wrote it, seems like there's room for negotiation . . .
And Boreanaz has also said that he would be interested in a big screen Angel movie. Those guys need to communicate!
Yeah it's pretty ironic we've heard DB and SMG open to a feature, and this article says otherwise, weird, perhaps the interview is faulty.
I doubt the interview is "faulty" as it is often the case that those in the entertainment business say one thing in public to portray the right image and form deals in the background...Perhaps Joss is merely being coy?
Whilst it is quite likely he hasn't heard Sarah's latest comments about how she feels concerning the possibility of a movie it seems strange to me that Joss would be under the impression that David was not interested in a cinematic release considering the fact he has been quite vocal in the fact that he would be open to returning to Angel for a big screen adventure.

I'm thinking this interviewer either misunderstood what Joss said or purposely missed out the facts for the sake of limited space or time for the article.

Either way it makes me want to start letter writing to Mutant Enemy just in case we are about to miss the chance of a Buffy/Angel movie because of simple misunderstandings!
I get the feeling this information is only loosely derived from some of Joss's previous recent Buffy/Angel statements. I hesitate to put much credence in the DB/SMG remarks when there are no direct quotes and they contradict what we've already gathered from Comic-Con and elsewhere.

Either way it makes me want to start letter writing to Mutant Enemy just in case we are about to miss the chance of a Buffy/Angel movie because of simple misunderstandings!

Not such a bad idea, if only because Mercury is retrograde for the next few weeks. (Scoff if you like, but seasoned celestial watchers know things tend to go haywire with communications of all sorts when this is going on, with misunderstandings being common.) Cosmic interference aside, I don't think a flurry of postcards restating a continued interest in any big-screen B/A-verse venture would hurt...
Yeah when they paraphrase in an article one should always keep a nice grain of salt handy. If there's quotes, it's more reliable, but the general gist-phrasing is usually dubious at best.

Could also be that Joss made a sarcastic joke as he is wont to do. Or maybe he does believe this, which isn't that weird. Sarah has been saying no to a Buffy movie for years now. It's only recently that she's been genuinely more positive about the idea. (possibly with more time past, and more projects under her belt, the need to distance herself out of fear of being typecast is lessening, which would be understandable)

And David has been adamant about NO to an Angel TV movie. Maybe Joss has never heard the distinction he made about a big screen movie.

Personally I think that Joss should get Serenity out there, and have it be a success so he gets some clout in Hollywood. Then if he's willing to change the title 'Buffy' (like he did with Firefly to Serenity) I think a Buffyverse movie is quite possible.
Yeah, I don't think a Buffyverse movie is out of the question if they could get everyone talking to each other, but I'd really love to see Joss do X3 first.
EdDantes, i'm not so sure that a title change for a Buffy movie is all that neccessary. That title holds a lot of sway these days amongst the genre fan crowd who will no doubt be the majority of the film's audience.

Whilst the title may put off a small number who have somehow managed to miss the last eight years worth of televised slayerverse and still think of the original movie as being the only kind of Buffy there is (enough to put anyone off seeing a new Buffy movie) i think most people by now do know of the series and either love it or hate it on it's own merits. The rest, who have never heard of Buffy at all (if that is even possible) will either go see the movie or not based on how good the trailer and reviews are, same as any other movie.

Ultimately though i think the Buffy movie would benefit more than it would suffer from keeping the name of the series.

Having said all that, if Joss felt a movie name was neccessary, i'd personally go for "Slayer", pretty much sums it up to me :)
I'd also love to see Joss at the helm of X3, but he'll not get free reins for that. He's always best when he gets to do what he wants the way he wants it. If he signs on to X3 it will (hopefully) be because he can get to do it right, and I'll be thrilled. Otherwise, I'll just patiently await his next project.
If this interview is in fact accurate, I suspect Joss was just being coy. He has been known to give the media misleading statements before. And I've noted he tends to do so on these "on-the-fly" interviews as it appears to be the case here. Joss has stated in several "serious" interviews that he would be interested in a BtVS movie. I can recall one he gave just after the series ended, when Sarah was saying she would not want to do a Buffy movie. Joss thought he could get her to warm up to the idea after she spread her wings and got some feature films behind her. And it would appear he was right. As several of you have pointed out, Sarah has stated she would be willing to do a Buffy movie. And David has stated repeatedly that he would return as Angel for a big screen movie.

As to when, best guess is when Joss feels the time is right. I've no doubts that there will be a Buffy movie in the future. The Buffyverse cult phenomenon is just too large not to. They are not going to let that just slip quietly under the rug. May be a few years, but it will come. As was Sarah, I think Joss just wants a break and spread his wings as well.

As for writing letters to ME, that's always a good idea. Never hurts to remind them there is a fan base, a little pressure may push the time line sooner rather than later. Just word them nice, please.
I get the feeling that Joss did some sort of conference call as there's a slightly bigger interview (with direct quotes) at About.com. So I've added that link to blue eyes' subject line.

I noticed they had direct quotes about the X-Men 3 movie so I've added that to the link as well.
Thanks for the About.com update Simon. This article makes it very clear that Joss was talking about the tv movies when he said that Sarah and David probably wouldn't be interested, a fact we all know is most likely accurate.

This is yet another good example of how a particular reporter's choice of words can cause a total misunderstanding between what was said and what was meant. Thankfully the Whedonesque crowd are not so quick to assume everthing we read is accurate but the original posted article could very easily have been taken as fact, and i'm sure in other forums it would have been.

So now we have a clearer idea of what was said we can read more into it. Joss wants the movies to happen and, whilst he may not be direcly involved on a day to day basis, he is willing to let other ME'ers run the show. Don't know about the rest of you but that is exactly what i wanted to hear.

As long as Joss is there to oversee the slayerverse i'm more than happy to have others like Greenwalt, Fury, Noxon or Edlund take control when it comes to televised slayer stuff. I really want Joss himself to handle a big screen Buffy/Angel adventure but if he trusts others to carry on with the television series and movies then it's fine by me too.

Okay, so how about these four telemovies featuring Spike, Illyria, Willow and Giles and the third regular series that will spin out of them then? David Greenwalt isn't busy right now is he? ;)
Thank you Simon, this update makes much more sense. It's already known that Sarah or David are not really interested in returning to their roles for TV movies.
