How Homer Simpson (and Buffy) can enrich philosophy class. "But are Spock, Homer, and Neo the most effective teaching tools? While many agree that pop culture figures can engage students and elucidate abstract concepts, critics say they should be used sparingly."

I've always found TNG and Voyager, the only ST shows I really watched, to be over simplistic in their portrayal of good vs evil, with everything neatly wound up by the end credits.

Any crewman could go crazy and try to kill everyone, and they'd always be a rationial explanation that would neatly excuse their actions and by next week everyone would be best buddies again.

Buffy showed good people making bad decisions for good reasons and then showed consequences.
