A college girlfriend had a unicorn in her dorm...whenever a dormmate of hers would go out on a date, she'd throw the unicorn at the returning young lady to see if she could catch it...

Wouldn't Harmony's love of Unicorns be a nod to this movie since unless I got the timescales wrong or forgot something didn't we only learnt of her love of unicorns after that movie was made

The horizontal strap directly below the horn is part of the horse's bridle (assuming that's the thing you are talking about), although when I first saw it I had the same thought as you. :)
