Marti Noxon Talks Faith Spin-Off. Excerpt from a interview in the current issue of Dreamwatch Magazine.

I think she's got the right idea, and I definitely wouldn't want her involved in a Buffyverse project when she's feeling like that.

If it comes back, as a film would be best (though in a perfect world we'd still get that sixth and final season of Angel, plus maybe the Buffy Animated as a nice bonus). I'm really hoping for a film some day down the road. Otherwise, I'm content to let it rest. No Potentials series, nothing about the other characters, it feels over, I don't need more.

Though I'd like to see another Fray mini-series before I die. That doesn't feel concluded.

Must place a big question mark on this one.
Wow, she sounds really honest and resigned. I get her point. The fangirl in me wants new 'verse tv at all costs, but I get what she's saying about the stories. They'd have to really dig in and get reaquainted with the verse to put out what we expect and ultimately need from Joss. If he's focused on features, then a new series would be slummin' it, and I don't think I could take that.

Sub-par from OUR man? That just ain't right.
Yeah, I'd rather have nothing than something that's situated in the 'verse but not as good....
I understand what she's saying and I'd rather end on a high note than have the 'verse equilivent of Enterprise. But after a break of a couple of years, and if inspiration strikes, I'd love to see more Faith. Big screen or small screen.
Or the 'X Files'. Talk about a series getting run into the ground. What was Chris thinking? Back to subject, I find this article questionable. This doesn't sound like Marti at all. More internet rumors?
man, a fray TV series would be kick ass :) and it wouldn't suffer from story fatigue like a faith series would.

and it'd have flying cars.
Instead of translating Fray to the screen (big or small), I'd kill for another comics run. The Fray tpb is like the first season of BtVS: short, sweet and sets up a banging & intriguing universe to play around in. I need continuation.
If she's tired, get Tim Minear, he seems fresh. And get Jane Espenson, David Greenwalt, plenty of Joss's friends to help Faith.
I can see what Marti is saying. As much fun as a Faith spinoff (or any other spinoff for that matter) would be, it be almost like beating a dead horse.

As far as BtVS I feel like it is done and I have closure. Angel on the other hand, not so much. Just knowing that Joss had ideas for a season 6 and really wasn't expecting to get cancelled leaves everything very unresolved for me. I think a BDM would be a perfect way to resolve Angel. DB always said he might be in on it if its a feature film. I think if we ever see a continuation of the 'verse it will be in the movies.

I would love more Fray! I think a TV show would be tough with the flying cars and all, but I would love another graphic novel.

This is my feature with Marti from the latest Dreamwatch and every word is from her mouth. This quote block is from the end of the article and is word for word.
Yeah I went into my local Easons whilst I was shopping in town to check the validity of the excerpt. Thanks for verifying it TaraDi.
I think Marti gets a lot of unfair judgements & criticisms at times from the fandom, I think Marti is right on the money with her thoughts here.
*shrugs* It still would have been better than Tru Calling or any other show on T.V. right now.
I want a Jossverse movie just as much as anyone else, but I feel that if it does get made into a theatrical release then it might lose the things we like most about the series. What I mean to say is that we couldn't have the same in depth characters and storylines, and some things would have to be changed so they can attract new viewers. The only feasible way I can see us finding out about Angel is on the small screen because it would take a lot longer than 2 hours to explain his story, but I could see a Buffy movie happening because they didn't end on a cliffhanger, and they could start fresh with new stories. A Buffy movie is O.K., but I would much prefer continuation of Angel. But then again I'll pretty much take anything verse related right now.
I think there's still plenty left in the 'verse and Faith would be the right character to carry on with a series maybe more similar to Angel than Buffy.

I haven't been all that impressed with what Marti has done with Point Pleasant. Tim Minear would be far better running the Faith spinoff. David Greenwalt would be another interesting prospect. I know he's under contract with Touchstone now and maybe isn't on the greatest terms with 20th, but he was the one who wrote Faith, Hope and Trick. Greenwalt hasn't had much success lately (although Miracles was great), so maybe a return to the Buffyverse would do him good.
I think a Faith spin-off is needed (with Illyria could be good).
She´s not full developed.

But Spike, yes. He´s done (since Buffy´s finale). At least for me.
I´m happy with the way the show end, all the characters are done for me. Their stories are told (talking about Buffy). No need for more. Some day it must end.

If it´s not possible, go with Fray :D
I think a Fray movie could work. It would be big budget because of the flying cars, but aren't sci-fi superhero movies really popular these days? I'm hoping for it anyway. Someday...
Someone said time ago here, that the Sky Captain technique could work for Fray. And it´s very cheap.
I think what Marti said was right. I think that at this point there's 'verse fatigue. I LOVED Buffy and Angel and I'm ready to grasp at straws for new Whedon, but if Joss' heart isn't in it I'm ready to lay the whole thing to rest, really. I mean, give Joss a break! He's been working on the same universe for a decade or something. Serenity was fresh and exciting (and right now I'm almost peeing myself in anticipation). Joss knows best, and wherever his heart is taking him, new creation-wise, I'll be happy to follow. If that means a new tv series- Great! I'll plug my tv back into the wall. If that means feature-length movies- Fantastic! I'll eat popcorn until it's coming out my ears and bring thumbscrews for anyone who talks in the theatre. If it's comic books- Wonderful, let me just break out the geeky reading glasses.

In short, Go Joss, It's your Birthday! We, your loyal fans (and Flans) eagerly await your next ANYTHING.

Oh, and although Marti was never my favorite writer (I favoured Joss, and then Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie), I trust her on matters Buffyverse. I'm really impressed to see the way she's handling the end of Mutant Enemy. Had I Joss as a mentor, I don't think I'd EVER be able to leave to test my mettle.
Spike isn't done for me!!! However, I'd like to see any continuation of the verse when Joss is ready.
The verse itself and several of it's characters are far from done. Still plenty of opportunity there. The main thought here seems to be 'Only want a Faith show if it's gonna be good' but doesn't that go without saying? I only wanted an Angel show if it was good as well. I want it all to be good.

Main thing is that Joss should be actively involved at top, like with the other shows. If that's not the case, any new show won't have a chance with fandom beforehand. If Marti has vampire fatigue, she obviously shouldn't be involved. (Gotta say I already have 'devil daughter-fatigue' myself. Sorry, Marti) I recently read that Jane would still jump at anything Buffy-related so she'd be game. I'm sure that differs per writer. Main thing would be whether or not Joss still is game, but at the time he certainly was.

However it's obviously not going to happen right now and I think that's a good thing because the time isn't right in TV land either. Who knows, maybe genre TV will really make a comeback and maybe Joss will have a hunkering for a new TV show in a few years.
I really find it hard to believe that any professional writer could honestly say that they were running out of ideas for stories in the slayerverse. The concept has such a rich tapestry that i cannot imagine ever getting to the point where i couldn't come up with some fresh new demonic horror to deal with, and a new and interesting way to deal with it.

I can accept that the whole Buffy/Sunnydale scenario might have started to become a little dry of ideas, that had been going on for seven years and, whilst i never got bored or enjoyed it any less, you could tell that this specific setting was becoming limiting for the writers. A new start in a new location was definately needed for whatever spinoff idea they might have gone with. However by doing exactly that you could have placed Faith in her own totally new environment, given her a mission of her own to fight for, found her new allies and enemies, and never once had the problem of being too like Buffy, slayer status aside.

To me this says a lot more about the fact that Marti was ready to move on to her own ideas, which is absolutely fine as she had every right to wish to do so. However, that being the case, she should have just admitted that rather than blaming her lack of interest in the spinoff on there not being any more stories to tell, because i think anyone with a decent imagination knows that there are countless stories still to be told within the slayerverse. Hell, i'll write them myself if they need me to! ;)
I think Marti's new -verse storylines will kick in right around the time that Point Pleasant gets canned.

Also, why not start with Fray animated?
I'd love to see a Faith spin-off but don't know how much life could really be brought to the series.

But the idea of a Fray television series (or even a t.v. mini-series) sounds fantastic. I'd love to see that.
Okay, just off the top of my head, a basic premise for a Faith show.

Still technically a fugitive from the law, Faith has been forced to stay on the move as much as possible which has led to her accepting a position with Giles' new Watchers Council. She has been assigned to tracking down girls who the Council suspect may now be slayers, allowing her to keep mobile.

During a routine mission Faith stumbles upon an organisation who have also become aware of the new slayer population, although their reasons for tracking them down are not as humane as the Council's. The organisation is run by a powerful demon who is finding slayers and putting them into slavery in other dimensions, keeping the girls in the dark as to what they really are and what they can do with the right training.

Faith reports this all to Giles and he assigns her to lead a team to find this demon, free the girls it has already taken and destroy it's organisation as quickly as possible. The team consists of herself, Robin, Andrew and Dana (now slightly less psychotic than we last saw her), later to be joined by Spike.

There, that took me all of ten minutes to come up with an idea that, whilst using recognisable elements from Buffy and Angel, manages to be fresh and new and would give a wealth of new stories. I'm not a professional writer and yet i have the imagination to find a new show concept for Faith to star in. I haven't even mentioned all the storylines you could develop just from the basic character personalities either.

Saying that there is no potential for a Faith show is a cop out, there is so much potential it is ridiculous. You just need the writing team to want to do it enough, that's all.
I imagine a world where the "new" slayers are bad, because they changed the "natural" method to "create" a slayer.
Willow played with a power for which she was not ready, so... Faith must be: "Faith, The Slayers slayer" XD

I think Faith (and Illyria) have much potential (i´m agree with you)
