TV critic answers two James Marsters questions. Joanne Weintraub of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentry writes of her own Marsters fandom in response to readers during her monthly chat.

These days the WB is doing better with family shows like 7th Heaven and Everwood than with more offbeat shows like Buffy ...

Well, since the WB doesn't currently have any offbeat shows like Buffy how do we know really know this is true?

And as one of the smaller networks, they've been very cautious about made-for-TV movies.

So, make a series instead, an offbeat one like they don't have now.

Creator Joss Whedon's future does seem to be in feature films, though, so it's just possible that Marsters will turn up in one of those.

Spike Movie!!!
I've said it before and i'll say it again ... FORGET THE NETWORKS!!!

It should be obvious to any of us here that the six networks don't have an awful lot of time for anything the smells remotely like fantasy or science fiction these days. If Trek can't survive the reality dirge hell we are currently in then what hope does anything else have? Sure you have the occasional exception to the rule, such as Lost being a success this year, but for the most part things aren't looking good. You only have to look elsewhere in the above linked article to see what effect American Idol has been having on Alias to know that things aren't going to change any time soon.

However, go to HBO or Sci Fi and you have a number of success stories that most likely wouldn't have made it on the networks. Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Atlantis, Carnivale, Deadwood, how many of those would have made it passed episode five on Fox or the WB?

I honestly believe it's time that we stopped wasting energy on trying to turn the networks around and let them drowned in the reality swamp they are creating for themselves. If we want to see a new slayerverse project, be that a series or a series of telemovies, or something brand new from Joss on television for that matter, then we need to start concentrating efforts toward the channels that will know what to do with them and allow them to prosper.

Maybe on HBO a Spike, Faith or Illyria season would only have twelve episodes a year but can you imagine the episodes we would get? I'd be happy with that, how about you guys?
I don't particularly want the WB to get the telemovies or a spin-off. Some of the above could have been written in the sacarcasm font here on Whedoneque. It just amuses me to still see references to the WB's lousy decision-making regarding Angel a year later. I tend to giggle a lot when I read how they're doing in the ratings this year too. Perhaps we should write down a few suggestions about who Joss should talk to besides us.
#$*# the WB. I agreee with Mosh Pit Demon about getting a slayerverse show on HBO. Joss would have so much artistic freedom. It would be great. Could you imagine a show with Faith, Spike, AND Illyria? My heart is beating fast just thinking about it. At this point in time I would settle for the Adventures of Riley Finn. If Joss is the master mind behind it, it will be good. A feature film seems to be more of a reality with Joss's busy schedule. I don't see him diving back into TV any time soon.
IMO - shows' chance of being made as TV series
buffyverse 0% chance of happening
angelverse 0%
Slayerverse 1%
fireflyverse 0%
Whedonverse (new) 100% (just don't know when but soon damn it!)
I am interested in hearing her review of COOL MONEY.
"These days the WB is doing better with family shows like 7th Heaven and Everwood..."

Huh? How are these series prospering? I don't recall a time in recent memory when anything on the WB got anywhere near the top ten in television ratings. The idea that the WB is doing better with cheaper tripe catering to a family-oriented audienece is more a matter of perception of reality than actual fact.
