March 06 2005

Eliza's Tru Calling added to Kristin's SOS campaign. E Online's Kristin has added Eliza Dushku's currently canned "Tru Calling" to the Save Our Show campaign, which ends March 12.

I know many people here dislike the show and were glad to see that unlike its case-of-the-week victims, the show didn't get another chance - but this is for the handful of fans who really really wish it did.

For the record, you can vote more than once. I've voted for VM and Tru Calling five times each.

Anyone? Anyone?

It would be interesting so see if the show could improve, but seeing has how cast members are moving on, a revival doesn't seem very likely, at least not right away.
We can try anyway. Who wouldn't want to see this every week?
Daromaius, 'Tru Calling' is gone. Let it go.
While Tru Calling has proven itself worth saving in it's second season, my vote still went to Arrested Development, as I believe it's actually possible to save that show from cancellation, as they actually intend to air all the made episodes, and the cast and crew have not yet moved on. That, and that Fox have said since the order was cut back that the show is not cancelled, and that they want to see it on Fox for years to come.

It's too late to save Tru Calling I think, they wrapped months ago, and there are episodes made that Fox still have no firm plans to air. Enterprise too is beyond saving, when the cancellation was announced, even the studio that produces the show believed it to be time, and the producers said they were'nt going to shop it around.

And yes, very, very good point BufSlyAngel.

I thought Tru was done and gone at this point.
Actors released and sets torn down?

The six episodes of season two that aired in New Zealand seemed to have a good direction but I guess networks are impatient these days and being on Fox is a kiss-of-death anyway. How the heck did NYPD Blue get TWELVE seasons.... wow... that might never happen again in our lifetimes...
I was surprised to see 'Joan of Arcadia' on the list...
what's up with that?
But I'm still voting for Veronica Mars,
because UPN is still so small and obscure
that she needs all the help she can get!
I voted for Veronica Mars too, and I never seen it! Just sounds like my taste judging by the hype I've heard here. And Joan Of Arcadia's not too bad (not too great either, but still better than a lot of other rubbish).
buffbuff - 7 already ran (and pulled) Joan of Arcadia. Thursdays at 7.30 was the slot, I think. Only about 6 - 8 eps were shown. Don't know if it is permanent or not. It looked OK and Amber Tamblyn was definitely good in it.
Madhatter - Funny, coming from a Jossfan. Wasn't the reaction to Angel's cancellation making ripples for, say, over a year? If I recall correctly not ten threads down people were lobbying to send Kristin e-mails to revive Angel *this* year, if only to make a statement.

Don't be a hypocrite.
I'm putting in a symbolic vote for "Angel" to demonstrate how I still miss the show. Since you can vote more than once, vote for the show you want to save and vote in memory of "Angel".
Daromaius, that isn't what I meant. I wish to apologize for my poor choice in words. I meant that the Fox network has pretty much hung this series out to dry and I don't see any hopes in saving it. I'm sorry for the misunderstanding.
Vote? Vote for what?

American Dreams - Didn't like the premise. I could care less that it's still on the air. Never seen a full episode. Cringed at what little I have seen. Beyond that I've no opinion.

Arrested Development - Don't watch it. It's on Fox isn't it? I try not to watch anything on Fox anymore if I can at all help it.

Charmed - "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live!" This one should have been cancelled last year. The plot is being held together with duct tape and collagen. Besides the eye candy, there's really nothing going for this one. The only time it looks remotely good is when it steals from other stories, like Robin Hood or the Little Mermaid, or BUFFY & ANGEL! This piece of crap deserves being burned at the stake. I hope it gets cancelled.

Enterprise - I really like Scott Bakula as an actor. Jolene Blalock makes pointed ears sexy to be sure. However, the boring intergalactic politics coupled with convoluted temporal cold war plot leave an audience both confused and bored. True Star Trek fans find Enterprise doesn't coincide with the other series, and new audiences would be confused and uninterested even if it did. Berman & Braga simply are not Roddenberry, and lost sight of the vision of the original series. I stopped watching it two or three years ago.

Jack & Bobby - Didn't like the premise. It's on the WB, and I promised myself after Angel's cancellation I wouldn't get interested in new shows from that network.

Joan of Arcadia - I must say it is refreshing to see a television series dealing with spiritual concepts that's not solely catholic or jewish or protestant in context. There's even a little zen buddhism in this one which is fun. They keep it vague without sounding like a bumper sticker, or when they go for the bumper sticker they're also going for the funny. I like that. This is about the closest to how I believe God might be that any tv show has ever captured. So to that extent, I love this show. However, this is television and not a pulpit. Although after a powerful first season, Joan has tapered off some and the novelty of a girl talking to God who reveals Him/Herself as different looking people each week has gotten old. It's little more than a soap opera with a gimmick. Despite that, I enjoy it and watch it every chance I get, but if it survives into season three, it's gonna need something more than who's dating who to keep my interest. If it's not renewed, that's probably for the best. No use tempting fate, or God, as the case may be. One more thing: I like how Joan's boyfriend still doesn't say her name right. That's just kooky. I love it.

Kevin Hill - Huh? What's that? I dunno. Don't care to know.

Life as We Know It - Huh?

Medical Investigation - Yet another doctor show. I haven't even tuned in to this one. The title itself is about as generic brand as you can get. Next fall they'll probably have an hour long courtroom drama called "Court Room Drama." Yeah I'm in line to see that one right now. Not.

North Shore - *shrug* Don't know jack about this one.

Point Pleasant - Though it involves some talents from Tru Calling, which I also didn't really support, this one barely showed up on my radar, and the premise seems like another soap opera. Not interested.

Tru Calling - Eliza Dushku's a major babe, that's a given, and a talented actress. I think she should gargle with salt water for six weeks but other than that I like her. I watched a few episodes and tried to enjoy it. The premise was intriguing but the actual execution of said premise was not. What could have been a neato creepy cross between Bill Murray's Groundhog Day and Rod Serling's Night Gallery just became an excuse for Dushku to feign surprise every ten minutes. Unlike Firefly, I have to agree with the network on this one: it deserved cancellation and I'm happy to see it go.

Veronica Mars - I've watched one episode, and found myself displeased about halfway through. A high school student solving crimes while trying to have a normal social life and deal with her single parent? Where have we seen this before? While I felt Buffy was written for people of my age and a little younger, it still spoke to a wider audience. Mars speaks to young people and isn't really speaking to me. There's some good acting, I'll give it that. I could take or leave its return though.

The West Wing - I love this show and watch it whenever I can. It's gone through some political trouble behind the scenes with people leaving, but most recent episodes have shown a renewed vigilance towards the inevitable end of Bartlett's term. I find it mesmerizing, from the fast-paced and natural feeling dialogue to the struggles of normal people facing insurmountable international politics on a day to day basis. This series has deserved its adulades and has made fine accomplishments. Even so, it's been about the Bartlett campaign from day one. I sense they're going to try to continue it next year with a totally revamped cast and a few straggling regulars. They'll still call it West Wing cuz it'll still take place on the west wing of the white house, but it won't be "The West Wing" as it has been. I think they should quit while they're still relatively ahead. They can't outdo themselves and they shouldn't try.

The Wire - It's on cable. I don't do cable ever since the SciFi network cancelled MST3K. I'm sure it's a fine show. Like "The Shield" which I actually want to see on DVD someday, I've heard good things but not enough to make me call my local cable company. The pain of MST3K still stings. *smirk*

The shows I actually support this season are Lost and Numb3rs. They're apparently not on the chopping block. Joan of Arcadia and West Wing I can live without. Heck, Lost and Numb3rs I can live without. Only those four would disappoint me at all if they got cancelled, but I can't honestly see myself being too upset about it.

Nothing grips my attention today like Buffy, Angel or Firefly did just a couple years ago. I used to be a diehard Star Trek Next Generation fan. I used to be a diehard X-Files fan. I'm not a diehard anything fan right now. Far as I'm concerned the networks can just wipe the boards and start fresh.
Well if the shows you mentioned in your last paragraph, ZachsMind, are any indication, it looks like you and I become fans of exactly the same programs. Based on that: Deadwood is now out on dvd, season 1. Acquire them, and you shall become diehard once again. Promise.
I didn't think that Tru was a show that still stands a chance of being saved. I thought the cancellation was a done deal.
ZachsMind, you're really missing out on a quality show with Veronica Mars. The episode you saw was fairly atypical and I could see how it would give a wrong impression. I'd suggest seeking out the pilot by any means possible. I'd even be willing to facilitate it.
I'll pass. I really don't want to become interested in Veronica Mars. I'm pushing forty to be honest, and tuning in every week to see a show about a girl young enough to be my daughter? Just doesn't interest me for some reason. I'll accept that I'm "missing out" and be satisfied in my ignorance.

I've considered looking into Deadwood. Might pick it up via NetFlix. I really enjoyed Dead Like Me when I saw it on DVD. However, I've read that Deadwood has a high amount of profanity and while I'm not a prude, an excess of profanity does kinda turn me off.
I have to admit that i'm a little dubious about how much i will enjoy Veronica Mars, and i'm only pushing thirty. Quite honestly, even back when i was pushing twenty, it took a lot for a television show to hook me and i certainly don't go looking for my next television addiction, they generally find me all on their own. My love of Buffy came about due to pure chance. A planned Saturday night out fell through and i ended up flicking through the tv guide, finally noticing that Sky One were showing the first episode of a tv show based on that awful movie i had seen previously. Being a glutton for punishment, and frankly having little else to do that night anymore, i put it on. Seven seasons of that show and five seasons of a spinoff later i can honestly say i never missed a new episode being broadcast.

The point being that, if i end up watching a new series, it will be because of chance and not because i'm looking for it. I actually have recently happened upon Carnivale, since my cable provider has finally started including FX UK in it's package, so that may end up being by next televisual obsession. Guess i'll have to wait and see. In the meantime i'm not going to worry if nothing else catches my eye. The less television there is worth watching just means that i get more time for a real life, never a bad thing.
ZachsMind, Deadwood IS extremely profane. Although when you've watched it a while, the f's and c's just kinda roll off your back. You might initially get offended, but the storytelling will force you to hang in. I don't think I've spoken with anyone who's watched it and not gotten hooked.
It's not a question of being offended. I consider profanity to be a form of spice in the english language. I like it when used sparingly. I also happen to occasionally like anchovies on my pizza, but a little anchovies goes a LONG way. Too much anchovies and you're in an episode of Fear Factor, know what I'm saying? Abuse of profanity is the same thing.

It's one of the many things I loved about Firefly: the use of a foreign tongue as profanity in the english tongue. That just kicks major ass. Like a pizza with wasabi on it: but a little wasabi goes a LONG way. LOL!
Whatever! Just go get 'em! You absolutely cannot dismiss this show without seeing at least two or three episodes. I'm telling you, as different as you and I are, we like - no... love EXACTLY the same tv shows for some reason.

I'm going to shut up about fuckin' Deadwood now before I incur the ire of the mods, and probably the populace of this board. ;)
