UPN is in trouble according to the NY Daily News and its owner, Viacom, is asking for help from rivals Fox.

"Fox can argue that its stations would be better off without UPN, whose ratings among 18-to-34-year-olds - the group targeted by the network - are down 15% this year.

"Their two franchise shows, "Buffy" and "Star Trek" are down," said Brad Adgate, director of research for Horizon Media. "None of the new shows have clicked.""

We're going to end up in a place where we're hooked on quality genre TV shows... and we cannot get our fix because no station is going to want them.
Maybe we could set up a Whedonesque tv channel.

One thing though the signs for a season 8 are looking less likely and if UPN is in serious difficulty, it might be a reason why they turned down Firefly.
I think UPN could easily save itself by buying up cult tv shows that have recently been cancelled such as Farscape and Firefly. I'm sure there are some dramas out there they could buy up as well so as not to become a sci-fi genre channel.

I realize that Firefly and Farscape didn't attract the largest audiences, but they're loyal audiences, and that's what gets a station through rough times.
The thing about Farscape and Firefly that might make UPN think twice, is that they are relatively expensive to produce when compared with their ratings. It's the same problem they are having with Buffy.
