Serenity UK release moved... forward!
How does October 7th sound?
The UK Film Distributor's Association now has "Serenity" pencilled in for Friday October 7th - a whole month earlier than previously! Hooray for us Brits.

Am I crazy to have hopes that the International Press might make note of 'Serenity' at the Golden Globe awards? The Autumn release will put the movie out there at a good time to garner some attention.

Since Firefly hit DVD it might not be in any network's interest to schedule it for broadcast, but due to the rising interest, I still think whatever network has the rights at this point would be foolish not to play the series again late this summer, leading up to both the US and UK release. I don't know if it's FOX or some cable network. The latter would be preferable. I remember some years ago when The Blair Witch Project was preceded by a television pseudo documentary about the film's backstory, it seemed to boost sales of movie tickets quite a bit. Timing in this business is everything though.
I still wish they'd move the US release up into late summer, and the UK release alongside it. There's nothing in August scheduled that would compete with Serenity; a Deuce Bigolo sequel, The Dukes of Hazzard and some remake of a western no one's heard about. Word is they may be moving the film adaptation of Doom out of the summer entirely. Not a lot of confidence surrounding Doom. Serenity could fit into August with little trouble.
July's a little more risky, but personally I think Fantastic Four's gonna be a crapshoot. It'll get a big first weekend release and then stall by August once word of mouth gets out it's about as good as Hulk or Daredevil were. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's going after a completely different audience, as are the remakes of The Honeymooners and Bad News Bears. Still, Serenity would fair best in late August to early September, on both sides of the Atlantic.
Although Universal could risk pushing Serenity back more, they're playing it safe, hoping instead to launch Serenity just before the start of the holiday season. I wonder if they're gonna mass produce those action figures in time for Christmas..?

BTW I really want to thank everyone who has seen the rough cut version of 'Serenity' and have been so careful to not spoil all of us who are going to be waiting until Autumn!

Hooray for cinema cards. A years worth of unlimited cinema trips - if Serenity is good, I'll see it more than once.

If any of you wish to redeem yourselves in my eyes, my email address is available in my profile. I'm particularly interested in getting my hands on a URL to the shooting script. I KNOW it's online somewhere! I WILL find it!

Im not TOO fussed about this.......
(Just in case anyone doubted, i was joking)

I'm not sure how cards work when determining the movie's takings. Anyone know?
Grounded | April 16, 00:36 CET
Just to set our bearings, here's the latest movie releases in that time frame. This is the September releases and these are the October.
The only real competition I see here is 'Oliver Twist'. I think we're looking pretty here.
Apocalypse, please don't do that. I'm having flashes of the UPN room. We certainly don't want that here :)

I'm hoping that if Serenity is both visually impressive and well written then it will generate a lot of positive reactions from critics, which in turn would interest a lot of cinema-goers who wouldn't have considered seeing it otherwise. And there are also probably a lot of Firefly fans who want to see it.
I mean the sales of Firefly the series must have been phenomenal to spark interest in a feature film, and it seems likely that people who are willing to pay for a box set would be willing to pay for a cinema ticket.

And imagine all those unsuspecting souls who've never even heard of Firefly that walk into a theater and say, "We've seen all these other flicks. Let's give this Serenity a go!"

Nah, there'll be a shooting script available in probably not too long. If all else fails, maybe that script/photo book that Titan is putting out will be released before September 30th.
Really happy for all the UK fans. This is awesome news.

* virtual pizza that is, provided you play Kingdom of Loathing.
ZachsMind | April 16, 05:31 CET
Mind you, if we do, I will have to buy a new calander because I have the countdown "Days to Serenity" number written in very large red numbers on every single square up to Novemebr 10th. Kind of pissed off everyone else in the family who wanted to write other dates on the calender like birthdays, wedding anniversary, Grandad's heart surgery ....... Pfft, trivial stuff compared to Serenity's release date!

Virual pizza....are those faxable?

Anyway, looking forward to some 'Serenity'.

Good find and good move (please let this be really really true). Staying unspoiled and off-line for a whole month would have been near impossible.
They really should make it a simultanous release everywhere, as any delays just encourage illegal downloading and piracy.

Virtual pizza in The Kingdom of Loathing is not faxable, but it is k-mailable. Login, sign up. Tell them ZachsMind sent ya. If you look me up in KoL and send me a kmail (green message), tell me you're a Whedon fan, you get a free pizza. Limited time only. While supplies last. This coupon not good with other coupons. Eleven is ridiculous it's not even funny. Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear. Satisfaction guaranteed or triple your meatpaste back.
I used to host Whedonesque Trivia in there when I had stuff to give away. If I could get enough Whedon fans in the game I might consider doing that again. It was fun.

Oh, heck yeah. As it is, the strategy for this movie is simple: drag as many people as I possibly can into the theater. I mean, movies are group things, social things, right? So I'm dragooning as many warm bodies into the theater with me as can fit, friends, family, anybody I can finangle. I've already shown a few of them my DVDs (one, a huge BtVS addict likes the show, while another relatively casual BtVS fan really likes the show) and they know my goal is to get as many people to go as possible.
Heck, it's not as though I haven't been dragged along for my share of movies other people wanted to see. (*cough*Ring 2*cough*)

eddy | April 17, 11:46 CET
So let's look at the math. If each DVD set brought in an average of 3 movie tickets for opening weekend, what kind of numbers would we be looking at?
brownishcoat | April 17, 18:55 CET
Do we wanna just trust the odds? If Serenity doesn't break even, we don't get Serenity 2 and 3. As I understand it when Universal made the deal with Whedon, they only get to make the next two films if Serenity breaks even. Maybe all we can do is trust the odds. I just wish there was some way between now and September to do more than just talk it up with our friends, y'know?
ZachsMind | April 18, 08:32 CET
Look no further than this. Beware, this link contains full synopsis . The spoilers are in big black boxes somewhere in the thread.
Yay, my first post, although I've been a long time lurker here.

Unlike ZachsMind I'm trying to remain spoiler free so that I can experience the shock and surprise that Joss loves to present and Jewel has promised. It is still more than 5 months before 'Serenity' is released, a lot of time for people to get casual about spoiling others, so Simon's vigilance is really appreciated!
