Whedon confirmed for Dragon*Con. Joss and co continue to barnstorm across the USA in their efforts to promote Serenity. This time they will be in Atlanta in September at one of the largest conventions around.

Press release via email and confirmed by Dragon*Con:

"Dragon*Con Announces Joss Whedon Added To Guest List

Due to the efforts of John Tackett and Pat Henry, we are pleased to announce that Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy, Angel, Firefly/Serenity and the upcoming Wonder Woman movie has been confirmed as a guest for Dragon* Con 2005.

At this time, in regards to programming of Joss, he is there to discuss Firefly/Serenity and his upcoming projects . At this point we do not know if he will be able to discuss his past projects. As we get more information we will let you know.

We are also bringing in Adam Baldwin, Nathan Fillion, Ron Glass, Jewel Staite and Morena Baccarin from Firefly / Serenity as well."

Yes! Atlanta isn't too far from here I can probably swing this one in addition what I already have scheduled!!! Woohoo! I'd love to tell him about the Multimedia Project in person.
Well, that confirms MY attendance at Dragon*Con as well!
Excellent!

BTW, I will be there as an author guest as well, and the novelization should actually be out by then.....
Will you sign it for me, krad? :)
I just got mt ticket a few days ago in the mail - "Yes"!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah well, maybe I'll finally get to meet Krad as well and become more familiar with his work. ;)
killinj, he seems to respond favorably to gratuitous sucking-up, although I don't generally recommend that type of thing…;)
This is wonderful news. With the promotion Joss and cast are pouring in 'Serenity', I foresee a snowball rolling downhill.

I'm thrilled to know WHEDONesque will have a power team on location to report on this event.

krad, love your work. Please link up with RavenU and killinj to share your thoughts. Take care!
*laughs* No sucking up necessary, honest. And yes, I'll happily sign books and talk to people and share thoughts and all that good stuff, as anyone who was at I-Con 24 can attest. *smile*
I've been planning to attend Dragon Con, funds allowing. Now I *really* have to go!
Finally, a con close enough for me to go! Wow, I'm really out of practice, though. The last con I attended was back in the STNG days. I've really learned a lot reading everyone's reports of recent Joss sightings, but I'm nervous. What if I spend the money, travel the miles, and still get shut out of the room with Joss and the BDH? Any tips? Feel free to e-mail me if you're feeling knowledgeable :)
Actually aver the person who emailed me the press release gave me the following advice to pass onto Whedonesque posters:

"Closer to the 'con, you may want to (if I forget to) pass along to folks that if they want to see Joss and the other Firefly folks, they should plan to show up very very early (as in, during the previous session time)to their sessions. We will, of course, be putting them in the largest room, but we're anticipating crowd control issues and the Atlanta fire
marshals are extremely finicky about letting us pack rooms."
I've never been to a convention before, at least not this kind of convention. I guess I should have recovered enough from paying Uncle Sam by that time to be able to afford to go.
Thanks, Simon. I may even be one of those hard core fans who sits through all the sessions until Joss and Co., in order to get a good seat. Is that feasible or is it frowned upon?

Last year at the 'Con I sat through Harlan Ellison to see Adam, Nathan and Jewel. Unless specifically stated, it's fine.

Oh man, I'm geeking out here. Seriously, I can't feel my feet.
They don't clear out the room - 2 years ago a show called 'The Tribe' from New Zealand had the panel before the Buffy panel they knew who the crowd was really there for and they used that time to explain their show to the crowd and I think they made a few people want to check out there show. They were fun and interesting group of young people. The main hall seats about 4,000. Which from what I hear was filled last year as well as the year before, to much effort to clear the room out and they know their would be lines so they ask people be kind enough to give those who had come for whose on stage the chance for good seat and people could move up afterwards and in a strange way it worked.
It did work - I was there for that one. It's really a pretty good set-up, considering all the variables involved. Though it was a mad house when JM was there two years ago and even crazier when it was Nathan, Jewel and Adam so now that it's Joss...oh, geeking out again...
Is there that awful choice you have to make to either see the panel or get an autograph? That really seems cruel to make us choose.
Except perhaps for Joss - when they are not doing a panel most of the guest are in the signing area the whole weekend but I bet there will always be a line.
Thanks for the tips, RavenU and Psyche. Six and a half hours isn't a crazy person's idea of a short drive if it involves Firefly, is it? No need to answer, I'm a tad obsessed. :)
In regards autographs at Dragon*Con (I've been going to/working at the con for six years):

All celebrity signing at Dragon*Con is at the Stars Walk of Fame, in the Marriott (main programming is at the Hyatt across the street).

If any of the Firefly guests will be on the Walk of Fame, they will be listed in the con program as such. You will then be able to plan your con accordingly -- see them at the WoF one day, see their panel/programming another. Friday is the least busy day (which isn't saying much) so that's a good day to go to the WoF. Keep in mind that most guests charge for their autographs -- it's how they can afford to meet fans at cons, rather than spend that time working.

I am not affiliated with the WoF in any way, but my guess is that it is *highly* *unlikely* that Joss will be signing at the WoF at all. The crowd control issues alone would make it difficult, plus he'll be doing media interviews, programming, and all sorts of other stuff that would make sitting at a table signing stuff for eight hours a day pretty difficult. This probably applies to the cast as well -- they are being paid by the production company to go to the con to promote the film, which means (a) they don't need to sign on the WoF to pay for their trip, and (b) they will be spending a LOT of time doing interviews and other promotional stuff. Again, I don't know this for sure, but most time our really big-name guests don't wind up doing a lot of signing. If the choice is between talking to 4000 people about their project or spending that time signing for (maybe) 200 people, guess what they'll choose?

From one fan to others: Please, please, PLEASE do not go to this convention solely for the purpose of getting Joss/Adam/Nathan/etc to sign your photo/book/usedprop/chest/whatever. There is a good chance you will be disappointed. However, if you go with an eye toward having a good time at Serenity (and other -- Dragon*Con has probably the best fan programming in the world) programming, and MAYBE getting an autograph or two, you'll have a blast. Dragon*Con is *awesome* fun.

Finally (sorry this comment's gotten so long), if anyone is interested in costuming, Dragon*Con is the place to do it. It's always more fun to costume in groups, and there's the parade, the Masquerade costume contest, and the hall costume contest for you to show off your skills. This would (obviously) be a great year to get together a Firefly/Serenity costuming group!
