More speculation on a Spike movie, this time from Alyson Hannigan! This is via Kristen at Eonline. She also briefly mentions Veronica Mars and Charisma Carpenter.

Well assuming it's true, a DVD release would be very clever indeed.
Out of interest how would a straight to DVD release work? Would Fox still have to produce it due to existing contracts, or have these been the issues that they have been working through and another network/film company will pick it up (Universal)?

I though that movies that didn't make it to the big-screen went straight to DVD. So, if this was made specifically to go to DVD would it be a first?

I'm not very clued up on the way these things work, so what I've said above may well be the general ramblings of a mad woman and I apologise!
Could this be the "big new project" James Marsters was alluding to?

Did I miss something? I don't remember seeing JM say something like that...

Anyway, this would be very cool. *crosses fingers*
Didn't "Family Guy" have a bunch of episodes that were done specifically for dvd? And they sold so well they brought the show back to Fox? Anyway, I'd love a straight to DVD movie. I know it would sell well and hopefully be enough to make Fox or whoever is in charge of it, want to do more.
Did I miss something? I don't remember seeing JM say something like that...

Well, the past few cons James has said there is something big he's working on that he couldn't discuss. However, at the last con, he implied it was a series-the lastest rumor on that is Smallville(which I'm praying is wrong). But that's not to say he can't have a few big projects going on!
I have very mixed feelings about this. On the one hand I would love to see a Spike movie. On the other hand I really want JM to do other things and expand his career beyond the Whedonverse.

Can't I have it both ways?
FF: Nope, no DVD-exclusive Family Guy material has been produced, but the DVD sets did sell enough to bring the show back. What you're thinking about is probably the Family Guy movie that was in production a while ago, which was to be released directly to DVD. Now that the show has been resurrected, it's unsure whether the movie project is still alive.
Hope it's the real deal.

Ooh, this is turning into a good day. New trailer, possible Joss/Warren Ellis project, now Spike movie and hope for Charisma and Alyson to be onscreen together on VM.
"the lastest rumor on that is Smallville(which I'm praying is wrong). "

A few boards have a running wish list going on what folks hope it will/could be so any rumor is likely just speculation or wishful thinking. I didn't even know Smallville was still on the air! I know some have even speculated on Charmed with much shuddering and ickiness.
Well this is Kristen we're talking about here. JM has said we'd like it, by that I mean his/Spike's fans - not presuming her at all - :0)

He also implied with a nod that it was a series.

I do hope it isn't Smallville. Not that it's a terrible show, just I only watched the first half of the first season and wont have a clue what's happening. Although I do like the guy who plays Lex.
I wonder, if this is true, if they have more freedom. I mean that they have to worry less about censorship or time constraints. (You know how they have to write and cut things around commercial blocks) I also have to wonder what that would mean for the budget. They can at least skip the 'shopping around' with networks and dealings and whatnot which probably saves some time and headaches.

And if true, and successful as well, who knows what may happen in the future?
pjaine-
The Family Guy movie is on DVD, and soon to be in stores. I hope that massive quantities of a Spike movie sell. I think there is a whole group of people out there like myself who don't watch much TV, but discovered Whedon throught DVD. (It Rhymes!)I hope it leads to a series, please Jebus.
And don't forget, it's very possible that the Spike movie would be sold to foreign broadcasters. I could totally see Sky One buying it to show in the UK. 20th Century Fox would easily recoup the costs of it making it and get a tidy profit to boot.
I really hope for Simon's scenario with Sky One, and hopefully more would follow. :)
Like others have said, this is coming from Kristen, but with word coming from AH, maybe, just maybe....
*crosses fingers*
Well, if it does happen, looks like Willow won't be in it.

Drat.
"Smallville" is not a bad show. It has had writers from Buffy (Drew Grenberg, Steve DeKnight - who I think they're keeping for now and seems to write half the episodes); Miles Millar and Alfred Gough (Spider-man 2; Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights), and Kenneth Biller, who wrote one of my favorite stand-alone "X-Files" episodes ("Eve").

Still, I don't think that James would be a good fit for the show (except, like the cast, he is exceptionally good looking, and he and John Glover could then out-act everybody else in the show put together).
Kristen's whedon fangirlishness can rival anyone who posts here, so I'm sure that whatever she says is true. So I'm extremely happy. This just made my day!!!
Smallville isn't a bad show it just has awful writing and plotting that keeps it from being a GOOD show. That series had so much potential but they wasted it. I'm dreading its 5th season.
I'm sorry, but my spider-sense is telling me that this is yet another internet rumor. I won't get my hopes up, as I've been doing that for a while now, and I'm a bit tired of it. I remain skeptical until something official is announced.
Direct-to-video movies of established franchises are going to be the hot thing over the next few years. Family Guy's is done, Futurama's is greenlit, Aqua Teen's is in production. Once these take off (and I feel pretty confident that they will), the live action franchises will follow suit.

But, damn, does it have to be Spike? Sigh...
Gawd, I hope it isn't Smallville! Even though it needs all the help it can get, JM would be wasted unless the writing improves a great deal. The actors who play Lex and his dad are the only ones worth watching. And Lana? OMG, makes me want to stick pins in my eyes. However, Clark has very nice abs, as befitting a proper Superman.

Hmm, maybe it'll be 24? David Fury is the showrunner now and he'll need some new baddie to ruin Jack Bauer's day.

Whatever it turns out to be, it'll be fun to watch.
It is just a rumor. That's not from anyone official, who would be involved in the movie, just what Alyson "last heard".

"But, damn, does it have to be Spike? Sigh..."

My thoughts too...

I think Aly's pulling someone's leg. Hmm..
Okay, so me? Very excited about a Whedonverse movie. And I love the character of Spike as well. I do.

But honestly? Even though I would lap this movie up if it were to happen...I would much prefer a Willow movie. Or a Faith series. Or Melaka Fray brought to the big screen.

Also, James on Smallville? Worlds of no. Please.

And...wheee for Charisma on VM! The last time they had a reunion was in the 4th season of Angel. Seeing them come up against each other as completely different characters who might not have history with each other would be so, so cool.

I'm not sure what to think of the rumour that James might be on Smallville. I think it definately has a lot of potential, but sadly has generally failed to live up to most of it. There are some quite interesting characters like Lex, Lionel and Chloe, who are all written and acted very well, but apart from those supporting characters the rest of the cast isn't great, in particular Clark and Lana. Clark's parents are also good characters but are very underused and seem to have the same contribution to every episode.

The first couple of seasons were pretty standard, some decent FX, but the repetitive plots were grating and it didn't have the wit or deep characters to sustain my interest. It has developed a little more since then, but when you look at how soon Buffy for example managed to create lengthy and interesting arcs, by the second season, it has a lot of wasted potential. I think James Marsters probably could do an excellent job on the show and pull it above average, but if that was instead of a Spike realted project then I would definately prefer the Spike project.

I think the idea of a straight-to-DVD movie or miniseries sounds fantastic and I hope it is true. Recently there was a Farscape miniseries that went straight to DVD because of the fan campaign to save and then resurrect the show, because the fans wanted more of it. I think the same sort of thing would work well for anything in the Joss-verse. Whereas TV ratings aren't always outstanding for Joss's shows, the DVD sales certainly are so it seems like if projects were made specifically for DVD then they could be a lot more cost effective.

The possibility of Charisma and Alyson reuniting on Veronica Mars also sounds great.
If this is true, and I'm not saying it is, just the fact that a Buffyverse story would be made into a movie, no matter which character is the main focus, sets up the possibility for other movies with other characters that some people might prefer to this one. You have to admit that Spike is one of the most popular Buffyverse characters, and he will bring in the fans.

I still want to see a Willow movie, a Giles movie, a Faith movie, and an Illyria movie. And if these movies are made, wouldn't it be great if each of them had a complete arc, but the movies had a connection so that all together they told a larger story? That's my dream, anyway.

I'm still waiting for official word before I get my hopes up too high. My hopes are a little bit up though. I can't help it.

ETA: I second the idea of a Fray movie. That needs to be big screen though, what with the flying cars and such. It would need a bigger budget.

I'm going to go on record with a prediction: if a Spike Direct-to-DVD movie sells 500,000 units, we've got ourselves a series. (Reserve yours today!)
Regarding straight-to-DVD movies, Disney has done several animated ones. They're usually sequels of a popular film like The Lion King or Beauty and the Beast.
I think a direct-to-DVD Spike movie would be higher quality than the Disney sequels. If Joss and JM agreed to it, they'd be trying to re-start a franchise rather than milk one.

It's true that Spike is THE most popular person in the Buffyverse, but that doesn't mean I have to like him. I'll watch anything Angel or Buffy related, but I hope that if this takes off we will get a series with other characters or movies with other characters. I'd say a Willow or Giles movie for the people who want a Buffy movie, and Wesley or Illyria for the people who want an Angel movie. Of course Wesley and Illyria could have an intertwined story. How awesome would that be?

Also, it's a pretty safe bet that anything Whedonverse related will sell at least 500,000 copies. Last I heard Angel Season 5 had sold nearly 2.5 million copies. And as you know, Whedon fans are obsessive compulsive, and we have to buy every season. So why not buy a couple movies to complete the collection?
Given the fact AH has most likely not talked to anyone from the whedonverse in a long time, that they said Joss would have to write and direct this thing, ME is shut down,I would say this rumor is false.

I would say it comes from right after Angel was canceled, and alot of rumors were going around about trying to continue it in strait to dvd form.

I would still say Buffy is the most popular, but that fans of the character would deffinatly buy the dvd if there was one. I am not sure non fans of Spike who want other charatcers, of have no intrest in his own adventures would care much without someone else added to the mix.
All I can say is I WANT A WESLEY MOVIE!!!
Well it's hardly likely to be ninety minutes of Spike monologue is it FalenAnjl ?

If there is a straight to DVD movie there will of course be other characters .

Personally whatever post WB Buffy/Angel project is first out of the lists I'll buy it because, as others have said good sales could lead to more, maybe even a new series

Yes I'd even buy a Buffy/ Angel Twu Luv 4 ever film

or a Riley/ Kennedy buddy movie

( though I may have to draw the line at any attempt to ressurect Molly)

But personally

Spike/ Illyria would be my number one choice .

As to Smallville ,I've never watched it, but if James is cast in it I'll have to do some serious catching up and hop on board.
If JM is added to smallville, all you need to have done is watched the first movie.Know that Jor-el is not a good guy and the Zod is bad. And that Lex and his daddy are this close to knowing everything, and that Lois is there, and you will want to kill Lana ten minutes in.

Please no Kennedy. When I said other characters, I meant ones like Faith or Illiyara, someone that the fans already know and can bring in fans who are not so spike oreiented. And also you would have to bring in something that woulds intrest the Buffyside of the crowd and not the Angel ones. Spike and Illiyara are great for that, but if you like Buffy only, then there needs to be something added from that show as well.
Amy Acker isn't doing much now, she's free, JM is free, maybe Eliza later, there's alot of potential for these tv movies or dvd movies, if it happens. Spike and Illiyara is very possible, maybe those two split up in different ways to Angel after not fade away, and gone it without angel, and yence different storyline for them, and then maybe later, a angel feature film combining all of them! now that is the dream plan!
Given the fact AH has most likely not talked to anyone from the whedonverse in a long time, that they said Joss would have to write and direct this thing, ME is shut down,I would say this rumor is false.

FalenAnjl

Mutant Enemy isn't something offical like Fox Studios, it exists inside Joss's head, he's just given it a break, it can easily return, and Joss is clever and has smart friends like Jeffrey Bell and Tim Minear who speak similar language to him, so he doesn't have to be so hands on as he's busy with movies as well.

This is the first I've heard of any "JM on Smallville" rumours. Wishful thinking or based on some kind of vaguely-fact-based hint?

Huh. JM on Smallville.. Hmm..

I actually think that'd be kinda cool.. y'know.. if his character got to make-out with Lex. Or argue with Lionel. Or argue with and make-out with Lex and Lionel. Yes.. yes, I'm liking this idea.

Urm.. there was something else.. oh, the Spike movie, right. Yes. Uhh.. Good idea! Go for it! *waves banner*

*daydreams of a Lex/Spike all-naked straight-to-DVD crossover movie.. possibly a musical..*
Dare I suggest that Alyson Hannigan is aware of this because Joss inquired about Alexis' availablity?
Spike movie has a lot of potential because Spike has backstory with practically every character on both shows. Thus writers can reintroduce anybody - Giles, Wesley, Xander, Willow - absolutely seamlessly. The problem is that, according to last news and rumors, JM is not free. If he signed a contract for a new show, he'll be too busy to shoot a Spike movie until the next spring.

If JM is added to smallville, all you need to have done is watched the first movie.Know that Jor-el is not a good guy and the Zod is bad.

Smallville often defies comics canon. Case in point - Lex Luthor. It could be the same with Zod (if JM has been invited to play him).
Oh please...hate to crash your worlds, but this won't happen.
That is not comic canon..That is the show canon. The producers said a new big bad was coming, worse then Lex.. Zod was him. Zor-el wants Clark to rule the world.Zor-el already tried to kill Bo kent and Zod's henchman landed in a spaceship in the finale.
Given the fact AH has most likely not talked to anyone from the whedonverse in a long time

I sure hope that's not true, else things are probably pretty tense and unpleasantly quiet around the Hannigan-Denisof household. :)

I think that Aly probably has as much info as anyone else may have right about how. She and Joss always seemed quite close, so it's entirely likely that they talk on a regular basis. I won't pretend that Spike would be my first (or fifth, or tenth) choice for focus, but I'll take what I can get. If Spike goes first and it does well, then maybe we can move on to other characters that I would much, much rather see.

Truth probably is, we'll have periodic rumours about such things for the next twenty years or so.
I want to be so happy for this, and although there will be a nagging doubt in the back of my mind, lets be positive people! If we say it enough times, maybe Tinkerbell will come alive again! Oops wrong universe! But to the point, we have to be ever hopeful and follow one rule:

Trust in the Joss

I will be.
The producers said a new big bad was coming, worse then Lex.. Zod was him.

The last I heard was about "new villain who Gough claims "gives even Lionel Luthor pause." The description is evasive and teasing. I think JM would be great Zod - and I adore Terence Stamp!

Back to Spike movie - I hope Aly knows something we don't.
Well, we have that quote from awhile back when Alyson talked to to TV Guide's Mike Ausiello and she's providing slightly more information now than she did then. However, even as a Spike fan, I find this doubtful. At least, it's not going to happen in the near future. I'm curious about JM's new series and pray it isn't Smallville.

[ edited by killinj on 2005-07-20 21:59 ]
I have a gut feeling it is Smallville. Funny cause weeks ago I suggested it to some friends too. My gut also says this is just Wanda spinning, and I expect that Tvguide's AA will debunk it fast.
Fox are sitting on a goldmine, Buffy and Angel are cults, the dvds, future formates of these show will always given them revenue, they have a chance to expand that revenue, doing a spike dvd movie is good business wise.

I also hear stargate dvd film in the works as well after the series finish, studios must be sensing there's demand from dvd fans of the shows.
I'd love to see this happen, a Spike movie is what I want, he's my favorite character, he's come a hell of a long way, but his journey isn't over yet. Aly and Joss always seemed close, and if Illyria were to be in a Spike movie, then I think Wesley would be in it at some point, if only as a flashback, and if Alexis were to be doing a Spike movie, Aly would probably know.

Smallville episodes range from excellent to dreadful, and usually hover in the "good, not great" area, it's managed to keep my interest for four seasons, and I'll keep watching it to the end. I'm one of the very few people that doesn't hate the character of Lana, I just really don't see why the writers have put her and Clark back together, I know the show has buggered with continuity before, but surely they wouldn't have the show finish with Clark and Lana a couple. I like Chloe, and I like that she finally knows, but her smart alecky "I know your secret, but I'm not going to come out and say it" comments to Clark are really starting to get tired. For a while in season 4 I actually thought that the show would start to see Lionel and Clark eventually fight together to stop Lex which could have been good, could have finished with Lex killing Lionel, but then they turned Lionel back to the darkside. I sure did ramble on a lot about Smallville there just to get to the point that I feel James Marsters would be a great addition to a pretty good show.

The problem is that Joss has spoiled us for most other TV.

I am starting to worry though, that Buffy is going to take the place that Doctor Who held for 16 years, being that we'll hear rumors every couple of months about a spinoff, a movie, anything, everytime there's a slow news day.

[ edited by Ghost Spike on 2005-07-20 23:04 ]
Joss would have to write and direct this thing

I'm pretty sure I saw an interview of some sort where Joss said he would leave the writing and directing in the hands of someone else. He'd still create the story arc and serve as the producer, but other people would handle the rest.
Have no clue what to make of this, but I will say one thing. Doing a Spike movie first makes the most sense because of the simple fact that we humans age. James Marsters is 43 and all the Hollywood work out coaches, nutritionists and plastic surgeons and overall good health habits in the world can't keep him looking ageless forever. Spike pretty much has to Shanshu, die, or go all Dr. Who and be played by a new actor soon.

By contrast, the other most frequently mentioned spin-off character is Faith, and Eliza Dushku is actually younger even than Faith is supposed to be, I think. We've got some breathing room there.
Fury, at the latest con said this. He also said nothing was in the works, and Joss would be busy with Serenity and WW. He implied Spike would be a vampire and not shanshued. Eliza and Faith were about the same age.

Stargate is doing great on Friday nights sci-fi, so I doubt it will be ending any time soon. And straight to dvd for a movie is still not a proven success.

Aly would know, but I am doubting that is where any of this info is coming from. I think it is just the repeat of rumor , that Wanda picked up on. AA got to see Aly and talk to her, yet had nothing to report.

[ edited by SoddingNancyTribe on 2005-07-20 23:40 ]
This quote from Aly just sounds too vague to put any stock in it.
Is it not possible that this isn't the full quote from AH though and that the rest, which Kristen may not have had the chance to transcript yet, will be in her column this week or am I just being optimistic?
Yes, but Fury isn't Joss. It's his opinion that Joss would want to do everything himself. Joss said he'd let someone else write and direct. So, unless I hear Joss say otherwise I believe his last comments over anyone elses. That said, I agree that it won't happen anytime soon because Joss is busy with lots of other things at the moment.
Sorry if someone else has said this, but doesn't Smallville tape in Canada? And hasn't James said he wouldn't be able to do anything ongoing outside of LA due to his kids?

I mean, it's a rumor with legs, so to speak, but it doesn't mean it's true...
You are correct! According to imdb.com Smallville films in Canada. So, unless its only a one time guest spot, he wouldn't be doing that show.
Smallville is filmed in Vancover. Which was why last year When Tru Calling wanted to use Jensen Ackles for it's second season that was not going to be any problem.

James would be on a re-occuring basis, if he does have the Zod role, so it would be like touring. A few weeks here and there. Did he not mention Vancover in his latest con rounds?

[ edited by FalenAnjl on 2005-07-21 00:49 ]
The only mention of Vancouver I recall is that he liked it there when he was filming some other project ... wasn't "The Mountain" filmed there?
In a recent con, he said he had been just up there , I believe.

ALOT of shows are/were filmed there. It is refered to as Little Hollywood. BSG,TC,Smallville,Jensen Ackels new show I think,Stargate, alot of soaps such as AMC, the 4400, to name a few. Not to mention the movies.
Reviewing what I rememberr being said or hinted at in the last 6 months or so:

Joss said he wants to do a Spike TV movie, and he has friends who can write and direct it.

James Marsters said Joss called him to find out if he was still interested in doing a Spike TV movie.

Amy Acker said Joss called her to see if she would be interested in a Spike/Illyria TV movie

JM recently seemed surprised that Joss was floating a Spike/Illyria TV movie idea rather than just Spike TV movie.

JM indicated he is in final negotiations for something that he thinks his fans will like.

JM hinted that it is a series.

JM has said that in the past year he has been turning down non-human roles and roles too close to Spike as well as work that would take him away from CA for too long.

When I put all these together I get a "no" to what JM is in negotiations for now being either a Spike TV movie or Smallville. If a Spike movie were that far along, I think he would have had a pretty good idea whether it would be Spike or Spike/Illyria. Smallville sounds like all the things he said he does not want to do wrapped up in one package.

On the other hand it also sounds like a Spike or Spike/Illyria TV movie could happen if everyone has a window big enough. AH's remark sounds pretty off the cuff, though the straight to DVD thing is new and could be good. Joss's, JM's and AA's comments seem to indicate this could happen...just not right this moment. I personally hope it does because I think Spike is right at the beginning of his journey. I would love to see where his unlife goes without Angelus, Dru, Buffy, Lindsey or Angel guiding him. Speaking of Dru, they haven't met since he got a soul...

So a long post to say, I think the new JM project is going to be more main-stream/less genre and that I think the Spike TV movie is a good idea that has a good chance, but is not happening right now.

...But then who am I and what the hell do I know?
The Smallville rumor is being reported over at Kryptonsite.

http://www.kryptonsite.com/

The Smallville upfront is on Friday.

I would say if this were to pan out, you could forget anything Spike related because of the hair dye it would need to do it and cut. Yes , I know there are wigs, but you can tell.

[ edited by FalenAnjl on 2005-07-21 01:57 ]
Who says JM's hair has to be blonde for Spike? Or seeing how much the WB liked the blondeness, who says Zod has to have dark hair?(And yes, I'm saying the above just a little tongue in cheek)

I'd say that it sounds very likely that JM will appear on Smallville. But it also sounds like we'll be seeing a Spike movie at some point as well. I really like the straight to DVD aspect, I remember awhile ago reading something in the Wall Street Journal about how this was definitely the future....so woohoo if Joss is one of the pioneers.
Kristen's latest post says the Spike to DVD is not true.
James has "kids"? Plural? Blimey, Rogueslayer, when did this happen?

Actually, I quite like the idea of James playing Zod in Smallville. He and Terence Stamp (in his lovely heyday) could be brothers, don't you think, Moscow Watcher?

And as for long-running rumours of Dr. Who returning, it finally did, didn't it? (And how!)
Word on the street is that he'll be playing Brainiac for 10 episodes.
SweetMarilyn, JM's niece is being included when someone refers to his "kids".
