More speculation on a Spike movie, this time from Alyson Hannigan!

I though that movies that didn't make it to the big-screen went straight to DVD. So, if this was made specifically to go to DVD would it be a first?
I'm not very clued up on the way these things work, so what I've said above may well be the general ramblings of a mad woman and I apologise!

Did I miss something? I don't remember seeing JM say something like that...
Anyway, this would be very cool. *crosses fingers*

Well, the past few cons James has said there is something big he's working on that he couldn't discuss. However, at the last con, he implied it was a series-the lastest rumor on that is Smallville(which I'm praying is wrong). But that's not to say he can't have a few big projects going on!

Can't I have it both ways?

A few boards have a running wish list going on what folks hope it will/could be so any rumor is likely just speculation or wishful thinking. I didn't even know Smallville was still on the air! I know some have even speculated on Charmed with much shuddering and ickiness.
Grace | July 20, 19:08 CET
He also implied with a nod that it was a series.
I do hope it isn't Smallville. Not that it's a terrible show, just I only watched the first half of the first season and wont have a clue what's happening. Although I do like the guy who plays Lex.

And if true, and successful as well, who knows what may happen in the future?

The Family Guy movie is on DVD, and soon to be in stores. I hope that massive quantities of a Spike movie sell. I think there is a whole group of people out there like myself who don't watch much TV, but discovered Whedon throught DVD. (It Rhymes!)I hope it leads to a series, please Jebus.

Still, I don't think that James would be a good fit for the show (except, like the cast, he is exceptionally good looking, and he and John Glover could then out-act everybody else in the show put together).

Hmm, maybe it'll be 24? David Fury is the showrunner now and he'll need some new baddie to ruin Jack Bauer's day.
Whatever it turns out to be, it'll be fun to watch.

But honestly? Even though I would lap this movie up if it were to happen...I would much prefer a Willow movie. Or a Faith series. Or Melaka Fray brought to the big screen.
Also, James on Smallville? Worlds of no. Please.
And...wheee for Charisma on VM! The last time they had a reunion was in the 4th season of Angel. Seeing them come up against each other as completely different characters who might not have history with each other would be so, so cool.

The first couple of seasons were pretty standard, some decent FX, but the repetitive plots were grating and it didn't have the wit or deep characters to sustain my interest. It has developed a little more since then, but when you look at how soon Buffy for example managed to create lengthy and interesting arcs, by the second season, it has a lot of wasted potential. I think James Marsters probably could do an excellent job on the show and pull it above average, but if that was instead of a Spike realted project then I would definately prefer the Spike project.
I think the idea of a straight-to-DVD movie or miniseries sounds fantastic and I hope it is true. Recently there was a Farscape miniseries that went straight to DVD because of the fan campaign to save and then resurrect the show, because the fans wanted more of it. I think the same sort of thing would work well for anything in the Joss-verse. Whereas TV ratings aren't always outstanding for Joss's shows, the DVD sales certainly are so it seems like if projects were made specifically for DVD then they could be a lot more cost effective.
The possibility of Charisma and Alyson reuniting on Veronica Mars also sounds great.
Razor | July 20, 21:13 CET
I still want to see a Willow movie, a Giles movie, a Faith movie, and an Illyria movie. And if these movies are made, wouldn't it be great if each of them had a complete arc, but the movies had a connection so that all together they told a larger story? That's my dream, anyway.
I'm still waiting for official word before I get my hopes up too high. My hopes are a little bit up though. I can't help it.
ETA: I second the idea of a Fray movie. That needs to be big screen though, what with the flying cars and such. It would need a bigger budget.

Also, it's a pretty safe bet that anything Whedonverse related will sell at least 500,000 copies. Last I heard Angel Season 5 had sold nearly 2.5 million copies. And as you know, Whedon fans are obsessive compulsive, and we have to buy every season. So why not buy a couple movies to complete the collection?
ShotgunWes | July 20, 21:51 CET
I would say it comes from right after Angel was canceled, and alot of rumors were going around about trying to continue it in strait to dvd form.
I would still say Buffy is the most popular, but that fans of the character would deffinatly buy the dvd if there was one. I am not sure non fans of Spike who want other charatcers, of have no intrest in his own adventures would care much without someone else added to the mix.
FalenAnjl | July 20, 22:06 CET
ShotgunWes | July 20, 22:10 CET
If there is a straight to DVD movie there will of course be other characters .
Personally whatever post WB Buffy/Angel project is first out of the lists I'll buy it because, as others have said good sales could lead to more, maybe even a new series
Yes I'd even buy a Buffy/ Angel Twu Luv 4 ever film
or a Riley/ Kennedy buddy movie
( though I may have to draw the line at any attempt to ressurect Molly)
But personally
Spike/ Illyria would be my number one choice .
As to Smallville ,I've never watched it, but if James is cast in it I'll have to do some serious catching up and hop on board.
debw | July 20, 22:15 CET
Please no Kennedy. When I said other characters, I meant ones like Faith or Illiyara, someone that the fans already know and can bring in fans who are not so spike oreiented. And also you would have to bring in something that woulds intrest the Buffyside of the crowd and not the Angel ones. Spike and Illiyara are great for that, but if you like Buffy only, then there needs to be something added from that show as well.

Mutant Enemy isn't something offical like Fox Studios, it exists inside Joss's head, he's just given it a break, it can easily return, and Joss is clever and has smart friends like Jeffrey Bell and Tim Minear who speak similar language to him, so he doesn't have to be so hands on as he's busy with movies as well.

Huh. JM on Smallville.. Hmm..
I actually think that'd be kinda cool.. y'know.. if his character got to make-out with Lex. Or argue with Lionel. Or argue with and make-out with Lex and Lionel. Yes.. yes, I'm liking this idea.
Urm.. there was something else.. oh, the Spike movie, right. Yes. Uhh.. Good idea! Go for it! *waves banner*
*daydreams of a Lex/Spike all-naked straight-to-DVD crossover movie.. possibly a musical..*

If JM is added to smallville, all you need to have done is watched the first movie.Know that Jor-el is not a good guy and the Zod is bad.
Smallville often defies comics canon. Case in point - Lex Luthor. It could be the same with Zod (if JM has been invited to play him).

I sure hope that's not true, else things are probably pretty tense and unpleasantly quiet around the Hannigan-Denisof household. :)
I think that Aly probably has as much info as anyone else may have right about how. She and Joss always seemed quite close, so it's entirely likely that they talk on a regular basis. I won't pretend that Spike would be my first (or fifth, or tenth) choice for focus, but I'll take what I can get. If Spike goes first and it does well, then maybe we can move on to other characters that I would much, much rather see.
Truth probably is, we'll have periodic rumours about such things for the next twenty years or so.

The last I heard was about "new villain who Gough claims "gives even Lionel Luthor pause." The description is evasive and teasing. I think JM would be great Zod - and I adore Terence Stamp!
Back to Spike movie - I hope Aly knows something we don't.

I also hear stargate dvd film in the works as well after the series finish, studios must be sensing there's demand from dvd fans of the shows.
SeanValen | July 21, 00:56 CET
Smallville episodes range from excellent to dreadful, and usually hover in the "good, not great" area, it's managed to keep my interest for four seasons, and I'll keep watching it to the end. I'm one of the very few people that doesn't hate the character of Lana, I just really don't see why the writers have put her and Clark back together, I know the show has buggered with continuity before, but surely they wouldn't have the show finish with Clark and Lana a couple. I like Chloe, and I like that she finally knows, but her smart alecky "I know your secret, but I'm not going to come out and say it" comments to Clark are really starting to get tired. For a while in season 4 I actually thought that the show would start to see Lionel and Clark eventually fight together to stop Lex which could have been good, could have finished with Lex killing Lionel, but then they turned Lionel back to the darkside. I sure did ramble on a lot about Smallville there just to get to the point that I feel James Marsters would be a great addition to a pretty good show.
The problem is that Joss has spoiled us for most other TV.
I am starting to worry though, that Buffy is going to take the place that Doctor Who held for 16 years, being that we'll hear rumors every couple of months about a spinoff, a movie, anything, everytime there's a slow news day.

I'm pretty sure I saw an interview of some sort where Joss said he would leave the writing and directing in the hands of someone else. He'd still create the story arc and serve as the producer, but other people would handle the rest.
killinj | July 21, 01:00 CET
By contrast, the other most frequently mentioned spin-off character is Faith, and Eliza Dushku is actually younger even than Faith is supposed to be, I think. We've got some breathing room there.
bobster | July 21, 01:06 CET
Stargate is doing great on Friday nights sci-fi, so I doubt it will be ending any time soon. And straight to dvd for a movie is still not a proven success.
Aly would know, but I am doubting that is where any of this info is coming from. I think it is just the repeat of rumor , that Wanda picked up on. AA got to see Aly and talk to her, yet had nothing to report.

ALOT of shows are/were filmed there. It is refered to as Little Hollywood. BSG,TC,Smallville,Jensen Ackels new show I think,Stargate, alot of soaps such as AMC, the 4400, to name a few. Not to mention the movies.

Joss said he wants to do a Spike TV movie, and he has friends who can write and direct it.
James Marsters said Joss called him to find out if he was still interested in doing a Spike TV movie.
Amy Acker said Joss called her to see if she would be interested in a Spike/Illyria TV movie
JM recently seemed surprised that Joss was floating a Spike/Illyria TV movie idea rather than just Spike TV movie.
JM indicated he is in final negotiations for something that he thinks his fans will like.
JM hinted that it is a series.
JM has said that in the past year he has been turning down non-human roles and roles too close to Spike as well as work that would take him away from CA for too long.
When I put all these together I get a "no" to what JM is in negotiations for now being either a Spike TV movie or Smallville. If a Spike movie were that far along, I think he would have had a pretty good idea whether it would be Spike or Spike/Illyria. Smallville sounds like all the things he said he does not want to do wrapped up in one package.
On the other hand it also sounds like a Spike or Spike/Illyria TV movie could happen if everyone has a window big enough. AH's remark sounds pretty off the cuff, though the straight to DVD thing is new and could be good. Joss's, JM's and AA's comments seem to indicate this could happen...just not right this moment. I personally hope it does because I think Spike is right at the beginning of his journey. I would love to see where his unlife goes without Angelus, Dru, Buffy, Lindsey or Angel guiding him. Speaking of Dru, they haven't met since he got a soul...
So a long post to say, I think the new JM project is going to be more main-stream/less genre and that I think the Spike TV movie is a good idea that has a good chance, but is not happening right now.
...But then who am I and what the hell do I know?

The Smallville upfront is on Friday.
I would say if this were to pan out, you could forget anything Spike related because of the hair dye it would need to do it and cut. Yes , I know there are wigs, but you can tell.

I'd say that it sounds very likely that JM will appear on Smallville. But it also sounds like we'll be seeing a Spike movie at some point as well. I really like the straight to DVD aspect, I remember awhile ago reading something in the Wall Street Journal about how this was definitely the future....so woohoo if Joss is one of the pioneers.

Actually, I quite like the idea of James playing Zod in Smallville. He and Terence Stamp (in his lovely heyday) could be brothers, don't you think, Moscow Watcher?
And as for long-running rumours of Dr. Who returning, it finally did, didn't it? (And how!)
