If a dozen more thousand give it good ratings it could get into the top 250. That'd be sweet.

Nah, it needs 1250 votes to qualify IMdb top 250. But it would be really nice to have it enter top 250 BEFORE it's release.

One of the advantages to the advanced screenings, is that it was seen mostly by the hardcore Firefly fans who are more likely going to love the movie and give it a good rating. It will likely balance out a bit after it's out in the theatres for a while, but the good rating should help convince some people to give it a chance on opening weekend.

Also anyone who is registered with imdb.com and wants to vote for Serenity. Go and vote for a number of other movies as well, giving a wide range of ratings. The more movies you vote for and the wider the range your votes are, the more your vote for Serenity will count.

There's been 60 fan screenings. I'm not at all surprised there's a 9.0. The fandom has been very vocal showing its support for the movie across the Internet. I'd be more interested in the rating two or three weeks after general release.

Well, the interesting thing here is that, quite frankly, people are puppets. If you tell them that something is good they are more likely to actually think that it's good. And if we have a rating here on IMdb to tell people that Serenity is an amazing movie that will rock your world, people in general is more likely to come out of the theatre loving what they just saw. It's different from high expectations. Expectations is something that developes over time based on what you envision something to be. But if it's just something as simple as "this is excellent" that doesn't really happen because they can't really create a picture out of it. They only know that "this is supposed to be good" and quite often people buy into that. So it's more like this highly manipulative and sophisticated form of group pressure.
The rating will no doubt drop, atleast to 8.5 and probably more. But I think that this rating will lure many unsuspecting IMdb users to the theatre which will mean a lot of extra cash to its box office.

Yeah, the long term rating will be _interesting_, but the short term rating could actually help the movie! Not only might it get the attention of someone who visits imdb, but if we can get Serenity in the top 250 *before it's released*, that story might make waves and generate extra publicity.

Very cool. I've been reading the threads at IMBD lately. Don't read them whatsoever if you want to be spoiler free. In fact, don't read any Serenity links beyond the summary or spoiler free reviews if you want to remain unspoiled. Lots of bombs over there with no warning whatsoever.

What's even more impressive is the voter break-down. 786 voters rated it a 10 for 73.9% of the total vote. The rating is actually 9.6. Not too shabby for a movie based on a failed television series over two years ago. I smell success!

Just a quick question, say I voted for Serenity now, and then went and rated loads more films, when my future ratings give me a better vote, will it give all my votes more weighting, or only those after the improved weighting? I haven't voted for too many films yet, so perhaps it would be better to wait until I have a better user rating before I vote for it?

For the top 250, only votes from regular voters are considered, so if that's your goal, then you may want to wait and vote on other films for awhile then vote on the movie when it comes out. I haven't seen Serenity yet, so I'm going to wait until I see it before I vote. I've been a member of the site for a long time though and have voted on several films in the past.
