Wondering About Whedon's Wonder Woman? Joss talks Amazon. Plus, another unsubstantiated casting rumor!

From CHUD.com.

I think Katherine definitely has the body, and her acting is fairly good. Interesting rumor.
Jennifer Connelly all the way. At least, that's this fanboy's dream.
SpikeBad, you have seen where Joss has said he wants an actress about 15 years younger than Connelly. Right?
Katherine would make a GREAT Diana.
Gina Torres is black?
Gina is Cuban American.
I think Gina's Cuban American, though parsing ethnic identity is kind of a fraught thing.

No to Katherine H. I've never seen in her in anything substantial, and a great role with great writing can make a good actor into an electrifying one, but I'm personally pulling for Morena. She may not have the height, but she has the skin tone, the eyes and the acting chops.
isnt she (Katherine) tall? at least she looked tall amongst the other girls Shiri and Majandra... i dont know if the height will even factor in
What? Another blonde? She looks like Glory!

And what's up with WW's pose there, in the artwork? She looks like she's so worried that her "suit" will fall off. Guess I'd be worried, too. And what's with the Manga hair?

Can't wait to see Joss' official take on all this. She is going to rock. He'll discard all these foo-foo stupid trappings. I'm sure he'll stay true to the character ideals, as well. Should be muy interesting!
I stand by my thoughts that Joss should get some unknown to do the role.

All these rumor women are too short! Let's feel the amazon love and make her at least 6'0!
I can't see why height should make a difference when Tom Cruise has made so many movies whilst standing on a box...
Finding a woman who is 6' and can act is patently ridiculous. Maybe it is possible but, highly highly unlikely.
You don't think that tall women can act? :) What dreadfully blatant height-ism.

"patently ridiculous"?

Harsh, much, TamaraC? And why do you think it's so impossible? Only short or average people have the acting gene?
I'm gonna go out on a limb and bet that the 'American' part of Gina's 'Cuban American' heritage is black. And since I have no feelings regarding Wonder Woman, I think she or Morena would make as good a casting choice as anyone. However, since Wonder Woman's mother was the Queen of the Amazons(ignoring that they're actually Greek), and the Amazon River runs through Brazil, and Morena was born in Brazil...I think the choice is clear.
I'm just saying that there are very very few women 6' or taller. The odds are not in favor of finding a good actress of that height. It is pure mathematics not anything else.
We need a booty-kicker with a lot of grace, strength, classic-feeling on-screen presence, and that great "make you feel what i'm feeling" acting ability--not casting decisions ruling people out based on if they tend to play characters with blonde hair.

I have great faith that the right person will be cast. :)
Maybe Joss will CGI a digital beagal as Wonder Woman. Maybe then, they can go up to 12 special effects. ;)
I'm cool with Katherine, she actually died her her dark for Roswell's 3rd season, and she looked great, but older.

She looks tall, she even convinced me to check out Grey's Anatomy. She can look the part, but something about her voice, doesn't sound too diana-ish for me, but good acting will solve the dilemma.

At least this rumour sound better than one that a brazilian site posted yesterday, about them offering the part for a Brazilian Model, which has no acting skills all, just looks, and were just awful in "Taxi" (yeah, that one with Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah, ugh... pain...). The article even had some non-sense about Joss handling her the script. For starters, Joss hadn't started the script yet. And I actually know that Joss would go first for acting, then looks. Well, if some one wants to check that non-sense, click here, I think you can google a translation for english.
The odds are not in favor of finding a good actress of that height. It is pure mathematics not anything else.

Plus, beautiful. The studio may want someone who is tall and can act, but if this theoretical actress is less than gorgeous in the face, she's not going to have a chance. So: beautiful, can act, charismatic AND tall. Frankly, "tall" is the least pressing descriptor on that list. It's the reason why most movies are not gagging to make supermodels into movie stars.

Lucy Lawless about ten years ago, and without the baggage of Xena, would've been perfect. Gina Torres is the only one of the Whedonverse women that physically fits the part to a "T", but acting-wise, I prefer Morena. I can't explain it, but I love the way her eyes come across onscreen.
Re: Gina Torres. 90% of Cubans have African ancestry, hailing back to the time Spain imported African slaves to do the heavy work in the "New World."

Regardless, I think she would be the most awesome Wonder Woman, but I think Joss is going to go for a younger actress.
I have been going back and forth between Gina and Morena (no other "name" actress does it for me). The thing is, if Joss is going for the "fish out of water", younger Diana, Gina doesn't work for me. Gina is so worldly and in command in every part she plays. I can't really see her playing naive. But I can see Morena doing it. The more I think about Morena, the more I like it. If the worst thing she has going for her is her height, that shouldn't be a problem. I believe she is of average height, correct? It's not like she's 5 feet. She has the looks, a va-voom body that with a bit of added muscle would be right, plus, she can really act. So, Morena or unknown is the way I'd like to see the casting go.
Once again I feel compelled to state the obvious: Charisma Carpenter is Wonder Woman...perfect fit!! Now certainly all the actresses mentioned above and in the article are beautiful but CC=WW, basic math!! If the person writing that piece mentions Summer Glau, how can he leave out Amy Acker?? Illyria to Wonder Woman, not that big a stretch!
Katie's got the body for it, and she is a good actress. She hasn't always had the best parts, but I've enjoyed her work, even in horrible films. I'd like to see Charisma play WW, but I'd be more than willing to shell out some cash and see Katie Heigl get the role too. Honestly, I think this is one film where bad casting would keep me from seeing it. Joss or no, I've wanted to like WW for so long, but everytime I pick up an issue of the book, it's so boring. Kind of like Aquaman, someone somewhere should be able to tell an interesting story with him, but I haven't seen one yet.
Calledon, I agree, Charisma would be a great match. I'm a little surprised that some people can't seem to see past previous roles (this goes for all nominations, really). She is an actor. While i'm not personally acquainted with her range, it's not fair that people automatically rule her out based on the roles she's taken on in the past (I felt this way about rumours of Maggie Grace playing Kitty Pryde--I saw her in an episode of "Miracles" that really showcased her talent as an actor, and she even had her hair dyed dark for the role, gasp!). Charisma would be playing Diana/WW, not going in and reading it as "Vision Girl." :)
Everyone needs to remember that as an Amazon Goddess, Wonder Woman is not supposed to age...ever. Same with her mother and sisters. With that in mind, pretty much everyone in Diana's world should be about 20 years old and physically perfect. (Perfect!) So Charisma would have been a great choice 10 years ago. Same goes for most other "short listers" that people keep throwing around.

As much as I would love to see a BuffyVerse person in the role, its just not realistic. Amy Acker stars as WW in many a dream when I'm asleep but not on the big screen...its like proposing Nathan take the role of Superman.
Gina would work for me, though I have yet to really see her stretch herself in a role, so I'm not sure whether her acting's up to carrying a big-screen lead or not (but haven't seen anything in her acting to disprove it either, the way – for me, at least – I have with Charisma). Morena I'm a bit more doubtful about. And while I love Summer, and am not one of those who thinks that WW should be cast based on looks, at all, she may be just a bit TOO diminutive.

But basically, i think (and expect) that WW should be cast outside of the whedonverse stable of actors. I'm sure Joss can find a wonderful unknown. Or i like the Jennifer Connelly suggestion someone had above as well...
it's amazing to me there's so much speculation on this. i'm happy to just wait until there's an official announcement.
To be honest, none of the current Whedon-women are my first choice. I'm either for a complete unknown, or for Claudia Black. We KNOW Claudia can pull off badass combined with innocence very very well (think Aeryn Sun visiting Earth for the first time).
Am I crazy to think that Maggy Gyllenhaal could pull off a great Wonder Woman? She's not your typical Amazon woman but, IMHO, she has the acting chops, ... and the eyes! Hey, nobody thought Toby could be Spiderman!
I love Charisma. And I'm always one of the first people to say that she's perfect for the role of Wondy.

That being said, if anyone's checked out the DC Comics Message Boards, there's a bit of an uproar what with Joss having been chosen as the writer/director of Wonder Woman, and a lot of people who aren't familiar with his work are expecting Valley Girl Wondy. I think it'd be best for Joss to steer clear away from his current Whedonverse actresses and find someone outside that circle so those same people who fear Valley Girl Wondy will come and see the movie. I mean, most of us are going to see it regardless of the actress because Joss is doing writing and directing it.
I don't think DC Comics WW board is exactly the best place to check out other people opinion. It's not quite the most civilized place in the web. I did checked the board for a while, during Jimenez' run on the comic book, and wasn't very pleasant. Or maybe, I'm just too used, whedonesque more civilized discussions. Those fans over the dc comics boards, tend to be bit too overboard.

I always thought that Charisma would be a great choice. She looks as good now, as she did back in Buffy S1, and it seems that she only aged a bit, since then. Just check the those pics with her from Veronica Mars, or even her last year stint on "Charmed" (ugh...), shows that she has the body, the stature and enough looks to pull it off. And we know she can act. And she's sort of unknown for the movie world.

But she's already in her mid-30s. As several people already said, they're gonna look for someone way younger for the part. Warner will problem sign the actress for a multiple movie contract. Connely would be great, but she's too old. Lawless, too old. I have another personal favorite which would be, Lauren Graham, but she's also too old.

They'll probably cast someone in the early or mid-20s. It's not like Joss hasn't been known for discovering new faces. Summer's first ever job was her part in Angel, for example. Brandon Routh, who's playing Superman, is 25, and he's supposed to be playing an older Superman. But, if they get to make sequels, he won't have aged too much for the part when they make them. Even Tom Welling is reaching his 30s.
I must say, this is my favorite rumor yet (of the many --some rather hideous!--that have surfaced over the past several months). Katherine Heigl is a great actor (anyone remember her stint as a "dupe" New Yorker alien on Roswell?) and has that "grace, strength, classic-feeling on-screen presence" that Lunakitty speaks of. I think she would be great! Also love Gina and Morena...we will all have much to say when the auditioning starts!
LOL, I think they should have a huge auditioning extravaganza a la Gone With the Wind and have all the big name actresses' auditions on the dvd! In fact, have them all audition as Scarlett O'Hara, too!
