Serenity featured in Premiere Magazine. A 3-page feature with a blurb on the cover, "Plan B from Outer Space" gives the usual background story on how Firefly became Serenity. It doesn't have anything all that new for those of us who are already fans, but it's a nice article (some good pics, too)...and very good exposure. [Print edition only, alas.] A few quotes follow...

"Star Trek would hit the big issues, with the alien coming in saying [grandiosely], 'I am from the World of Racism,'" Whedon adds. "Whereas our issues are like, 'How are we conna eat?' The Millennium Falcon analogy has been made a lot, and the premise sort of is, 'What if Han Solo never met up with the Rebellion--just did his job and never found a higher purpose?'"

"You really felt robbed of being able to experience revelations that Joss had planned," says Ron Glass (Barney Miller), whose holy man Shepherd Book is one of the story's more enigmatic characters. "They canceled us halfway through shooting an episode the week before Christmas, and it came as a shock, because we had been steadily growing an audience," says Gina Torres (the Matrix sequels), who plays Zoe Warren, the ship's Amazonian second-in-command. Laughing, she adds, "For the last four days, we all made an effort to secretly flip Fox the bird in as many scenes as we could. So when my hand is in my holster, maybe four out of five fingers are concealed. You do what you can under the circumstances."

As for Serenity's captain, "we were allowed in the movie to make him as dark as we wanted to in the series," says Fillion. "I might just be talking out of my ass, but as it stands, I would not mind being pigeonholed for the rest of my life as Malcolm Reynolds. I don't look at William Shatner doing Boston Legal and say, 'Oh, he'll only ever be Captain Kirk to me.' But he has immortalized a character. I wouldn't mind Malcolm Reynolds being immortal. Right now, he's like a dirty secret."

So many comments to make. So little time.
Thanks so much, tehipite_tom. Mighty good of you to share this with us. Couple this article with this week's EW article on the genesis of Serenity and its unusual marketing strategy and I'd say this has been a very good Serenity week here in the U.S. EW and Premiere are serious, big-time exposure.

I have to say, EW has been pretty good all along; I can think of quite a few Serenity mentions ranging from short blurbs to two-page spreads. This is the first thing I've seen in Premiere, though (outside of a short blurb in the Fall Movie Preview), so it's especially exciting. In any case, you're right--good big-time exposure.

Serenity even gets a mention on EW's COVER this week (look for cover with Nip/Tuck). I *heart* EW!!
Too right you are about EW, tehipite_tom. EW has been supportive of Firefly and Serenity from the start. Then there's EW's long-standing huge support and enthusiasm for Buffy and Angel. And Joss. You're also right that Premiere is a major coup. Neither EW or Premiere are boutiquey, small magazines. They're major stuff.
Oh, dear, Malcolm Reynolds is so, so much more interesting a character than James T. Kirk...no offense to ST fans, but, I mean, just, well, damn...and in just a handful of episodes...but, well, damn...

And, yes, thanks, tehipite.
