(SPOILER) The Onion Reviews Serenity. Yet another very positive review from a respected critic.

They say "Serenity is still taut, immersive, and alternately hilarious and heartbreaking, a well-balanced blend of whooping Wild West action and space opera."

Also, best title for a Serenity review so far: Fan Candy
Correct me if im wrong, but isent The Onion a site devoted to fake news?
Not only, Rip2~~.

Money quote, in my estimation:

The bravura sequence feels as much like a victory lap as a reintroduction to the cast and setting.

Yes, yes, yes, that's exactly what I felt at the pre-screenings in May and June.
Rip2: the Onion AV Club is separate from the satirical part of the Onion; they do real reviews & interviews and such.
Off topic, I posted and ran earlier, but was the link I did to the negative Rotten Tomatoes review already posted before? I see it's gone now, but I thought I checked the other posts. Sorry if it was a duplicate....just curious.

Oh wait, someone probably already posted to rottentomatoes as a whole...yeah...gotcha.

I just read that Victoria Alexander review Rogue Slayer. While valid I guess, I kept getting irritated over her continued use of "Wheldon". Why is Whedon so hard to spell? Whe. Don. Jesus. Its not like he has a italian or russian looking name.

But half of their review isn't even talking about the movie. And the rest is to complain about River's weight. And about the boots. Doesn't she always wear those? Except when she's bear footed. But I'm pretty sure she's wearing boots any other time. Oh and this - "Fillion, an obvious alterego for Wheldon" - I don't think thats obvious at all. Wash is the alterego, not Mal.
Yeah, the whole 'Wheldon' thing just put me off from the start. It's almost deliberate.

And the alterego stuff...makes me wonder if this person knows anything about Joss.
Joss even says in the interview in the official visual companion thingy, that if he sat down to dinner with Mal, they would probably not get along.
Is the Onion doing this name-switching thing on purpose, using the actors' names when they mean to refer to the characters? On purpose or not, I find it irritating. I forgive them though, because they wrote a very nuanced and appreciative review.
Okay, so NYC seems to be a Serenity-lovin' town. First NY Magazine, then the Village Voice, now The Onion A.V. I'm dying to find out what the NY Times and the New Yorker (should it review Serenity at all) will make of it.

Btw, did anyone notice the searing review of Into the Blue in the Onion A.V.? I cackled with schadenfreude. I also emerged more hopeful that the movie-going masses may quickly abandon Into the Blue in favor of our beloved Serenity. Sure, there are a lot of people who love schlock out there, but boring, bad schlock? Not so much. May Serenity kick Into the Blue's a#$ on opening weekend!
Actually, the Onion AV club's editorial offices (and Tasha Robinson, the author of the review in question) are in Chicago.

I'm on pins and needles ... so interesting reading others' reactions to the movie.

Ah, didn't know that, nemo. Why am I thinking the Onion is such an NYC thing? Anyway, it's a very good piece.
Rogue Slayer, it was mentioned in another thread. It was then posted to the frontpage twice and both were deleted.
It's great, in that the Onion reviewers are quite tough (but fair) as a group and they'll get some great quotes for the ads. But this, like the Ken Tucker review, was from another fan of the show. The real test remains the non-fans...

On the other hand, I'm not the least bit worried about "Into the Blue" -- frankly, anyone who pays $10.00 is probably going to deserve what they get. I think the real competition is "Corpse Bride" and the Jodie Foster movie (maybe) and, in certain markets, "A History of Violence" which is getting a lot of great press and I'm guessing may be one of the year's big Oscar films and may do some real business. And then there's the Viggo Mortensen factor. I think Viggo is to women as Jessica Alba to probably about the gazillionth power, from what I've been told.

My gut says, however, that "Serenity" wins the weekend. I really think that people's curiousity will be piqued. The big question is with what kind of take.
Ah, the Onion offices may be in NYC and Chi town now, but it will always be a Madison, WI paper to me. Anyway, cool review. I've been having a bunch of opening week anxiety, but now that the good reviews keep rolling in, I realize it's not just us who love this stuff.
