NewScientist is taking nominations for your favourite works of space science fiction. I nominated Firefly. The most popular works will be put on a shortlist to be voted upon later from the 10th of October.

NewScientist is a big player in the popular science market and has plenty of readers. This poll is a part of the NewScientist space website, but it's linked to on the main page. Exposure for Firefly or Serenity here would be a good thing. There's also a forum to discuss your choices, which can be found here.

My personal list,

Tv Shows : Babylon 5 still tops with new Galactica a strong contender, sorry but I missed out on all the Treks.
( Firefly is good but both B5 and new improved BSG leaves it in the dust )

Books : Dune still tops with Asimovs original Foundation trilogy as strong contender, Webers Harrington series in competition but the last one was weak.

Films : Original Star Wars vs original Alien, impossible choice,
2001 a strong contender.

( Havent seen Serenity yet since its not yet released around here, from the spoilers I've read it sounds like I'm going to like it, a lot :)
I agree with you on the fact that Babylon 5 and the new Galactica are very good shows, but I'd still place Firefly on top. Simply because the characters that Joss has written are more consistent and layered in my opinion. Just look at what the new Galactica is doing with Baltar for example.

But, yes, Babylon 5 has been in my top10 of favourite genre shows for quite some time, and the new Battlestar has pushed its way onto that list as well.

For Films, Serenity is on top, as far as space science fiction goes. If 'Contact' counts, it'd be second, followed by 'The Empire Strikes Back', 'A New Hope' and 'Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn'. After that, it gets more difficult, but it'd contain a bunch of Star Trek movies and 'Return of the Jedi' and 'Revenge of the Sith' as well.

As far as books are concerned, I can't say I've read much sci-fi set in space...
