Tonight's Firefly episode on Sci Fi - 'Heart of Gold'. It's also known as "Shower of Gold" or "Heart of Pooh" (according to Tim Minear).

It could be be said that this episode is 5 stages above an A-Team episode but there's some good moments. But it's not one of my favourite episodes.

Anyhow the Cinefastique commentary from Whedon and Minear.

Joss
Another one that we did a lot of reshooting and tinkering with after the fact. I think it came together really well, but when we looked at the first cut it left something to be desired. It was just one of those things with a lot of missteps. Also we had been getting notes from the network and we had done this early enough in the process where we looked at it and we were, like, “Nobody but us seems to have gotten the message to tone down the Western thing, so everything looked so Western that we were, like, “The network is going to kill us. This is like we’re spitting in their face.” So we did a few reshoots and changed a couple of lines to sort of hit the idea of why it was the way it was. We did a lot of tweaking. Our guest star, Belinda Clarke, I loved and I loved Inara’s reaction to them sleeping together. There are a lot of things in that episode that are key, but there was much work done in the editing room because we were scratching our heads saying, “It looks like Bonanza, what do we do?”

......

“Heart of Gold” is one of the unaired episodes and it had one of the most important moments, which is Inara telling Mal she’s leaving the ship. Which we referenced in “Objects in Space,” and then had to reshoot the scene because we weren’t going to air “Heart of Gold” before “Objects in Space.” So we had a little scene between Mal and Inara which we had to do a reshoot in which they didn’t reference that. Now with the DVD, where they’re in the correct order, we put it back in and it does.

This one is also known as “Shower of Gold” or “Heart of Pooh.” It’s not our favorite episode. This one kind of fell through the cracks. We never quite got the story broken properly. There were just things about it we didn’t love. But as far as I’m concerned, any episode of Firefly is good; it’s always fun to see those people. This episode, though, is a little generic. I will say that the last things that I shot for the series were some inserts for that episode; pick-up shots for a montage and that sort of thing. I remember the A.D. sending each actor into the room as I was shooting and they would get wrapped out of the series after I’d get them. That was weird, because you wrap out guest characters, you don’t wrap out your regular actors, except we were cancelled. So they would come into this room, do a shot or two, and then the A.D. would say, “Ron Glass. That’s a Firefly wrap for Ron Glass,” and then Ron would make a speech to the crew and everyone would cry and then each person came in. Everyone hung around until the last person was finished, because they wanted to be there for it. So that was kind of odd. Then the last shot I did of all of them together - there’s a shot where the entire crew of Serenity is walking up to a brothel. That was actually shot on a soundstage and it’s everyone walking up to this brothel and it was the last time they were all together on a stage to shoot a moment in Firefly.

After this really depressing day of everyone crying and making beautiful speeches, I packed up my bag and went home that night and it was all finished. I turned on the TV and that was the night they were airing the pilot finally, so that was the great irony.

I really like that episode - but only after a while, not at first. There are some really funny lines in it! And Inara's breakdown is just heartbreaking, I could start crying every time I see it.
geez, I kinda read the description as "Shower of Pooh" ... my blurry, tired eyes.

Not my favorite episode but Inarra crying tugs me a bit and two funerals in a row (The Message, Heart of Gold). hhmmm, Tim Minear calling it "Shower of Gold"... hahaha. It reminds me of a Simpsons episode where Kent Brockman reporting on gold found in the river and says "We'd all be taking golden showers." :D
This one took a while to grow on me, but now it's one of my favorites. There are just a lot of very nice small moments in it.
Hmmm - I agree with Tim Minear that all eps have stuff to recommend them, but this isn't one of the greats. Inara's reaction is amazing though, breaks my heart.
Mr Universe - 'Shower of Pooh'! Ha! Dirty.

I agree, mnspnr. Also, one of my favorite moments:

"Jonah, say hi to your daddy."

BANG!

"Say goodbye to your daddy Jonah."
It has a lot less subtlety than most of Firefly, but I'm in the "it grew on me" camp. I thought it was weak (and conventionally western) when I first saw it, but it seems like real Firefly to me now. Mal's relationship with Nandi is good, Morena is great as folks have said, and Jayne gets to be full-on Jayne.

It is not one of my favorites, but is still better IMO than "The Message," which also has its moments but is marred by central guest mis-casting and mis-characterization. I know I'm in the minority, and it's odd that a popular episode of my favorite series of the modern age can annoy me so singularly. This gives me more sympathy for the hardcore fans who couldn't stand the changes Joss was compelled to make for the big screen Serenity...

Edit: and that last scene between Inara and Mal is more heartbreaking than Nandi's funeral (or any Firefly funeral until the BDM).

I like this episode a lot. I don't mind the Western whorehouse cliche. I loved Nandi, I think Melinda Clarke did an amazing job. Hey, Mal finally got laid in this episode! That sex scene was hot! Who doesn't like naked Fillion?

I loved the heartbreaking scene of Inara breaking down and crying. And the last scene with her and Mal, where you think they are going to admit their feelings for each other, and instead Inara says she's leaving. That tore me up.

Some memorable quotes:

Kaylee: "Look, they got boy whores! Isn't that thoughtful? Wonder if they service girlfolk at all."

Jayne: "Man, my John Thomas is gonna pop off and fly around the room, there's so much tasty here."
Wash: "Would be you get your most poetical about your pecker."

Kaylee: "Everybody's got somebody... Wash, tell me I'm pretty..."
Wash: "Were I unwed, I would take you in a manly fashion.
Kaylee: "'Cause I'm pretty?"
Wash: "'Cause you're pretty."

Well said, ESG. I must have been editing in my comment about that last scene right as you were posting. I suspect the credit for the dialog goes to Joss, maybe Tim too. After reading the Serenity prequel comics I have to say I don't think Mr. Mathews has the voices of our BDHs down, much less the ultra Josspeak. I found those comics very disappointing on all fronts.
I really kinda dig this episode. I was actually glad they got the whole "protecting the whorehouse cliche" in, because I was expecting it ever since seeing The Train Job, and I sorta loved the use of western cliches.

Anyway, I always felt there was a lot to love here. The puppet theater describing the exodus from Earth That Was, some small bits of possible foreshadowing regarding Inara's emmigration away from the Companion Guildhouse, the introduction of battery-operated energy weapons (and the reason why most still use good old-fashioned bullets), and some hints into the role of religion on the border planets.

It also had some pretty great and funny dialogue (mostly already recounted in this thread), and the introduction of Zoe's desire to have children.
It's Melinda (Mindy) Clarke who played Nandi. I think it must have been a typo in the original article.

Very enjoyable episode, lots of great lines. I loved the western clichés as well and missed them in Serenity.
Serenity has western stuff. Its just not as prounounced. More subtle. I don't really like this episode but my favorite bit is the part where the woman shoots the guy at the end. That was funny and cold.
Strangely I really liked this episode the first time I watched it.
Maybe it was because I was finally getting some fresh Firefly, a few months after I finally watched Objects in Space. It was right about the time Fox Latin America was starting to broadcast Firefly over here, but since I already watched every episode except the three that Fox (US) never showed, I got really excited when I was able to watch them. Don't remember why, but I started with Heart of Gold, and I had lots of fun with it.

I heart those quotes too, ESG.

There were some fun moments, and I really liked the crew giving a helping hand for the whore house, and I love the battle to defend it. Nandi's death, now kind of remind me of Serenity, specially about the casualities. Yep, I finally watched it. Best movie of the year(expect more multiple view, when it gets the broad release). As soon as I finish this post, I'll head to the white site, to post my impressions of the BDM.

There's actually something from this episode, that I really wished they'd included in the DVD set. When Mal and Inara goes to that party, there's a guy showing some sort of video about the demise of the earth that was. And I think it was even recorded in mandarin. I always wanted to see the whole presentation, if they actually created a whole presentation for that scene.
Thanks, Eden. I corrected it.
I actually liked this episode a lot the first time I saw it, and still enjoy it. I don't think it feels like a really 'crucial' episode, despite quite a few significant events it seems to fly under the radar and seem a bit less important than it is.

I agree the plot feels very Western, but I kind of liked it, and essentially the whole brothel plot was secondary to the relationship between Mal and Inara, and Nandi's presence. We also got some interesting, though vague illusions about Inara's past, her revelation at the end, and a very beautiful performance from Morena Baccarin throughout. Melinda Clarke also brought a memorable performance to the episode, never overdoing the slightly melodramatic character.

I did feel the episode was quite light on the rest of the crew apart from Mal and Inara, but I didn't mind that much. There was also a very impressive battle sequence, with a lot of interesting stuff going on, and it really reminds me of a certain part of "Serenity" and even has the feeling of something like "Assault on Precinct 13" or a good old Western.

I don't think it will be remembered or watched as frequently as some of the other episodes, but it is enjoyable.
Worst episode ever, and I still absolutely love it, for all the reasons above.

It's far too traditional for me, relative to the other episodes.

But, the great (and side-splitting) dialogue, the character development and exposition...it's a marvelous bit of television, from a marvelous show, so, I guess "worst epidode ever" of Firefly is high praise indeed.
Yeah "not my favorite." It's just too... I don't know, but it's not that great. It's got it's great moments, but it's not a great episode. And the actor playing Rance was just horrible.
The entertainment at Rance's party is actually a shadow-puppet play with a narrator speaking in Mandarin.
Yep, you know you're discussing a Joss Whedon show when everyone agrees that even the worse episodes are far better than anything else on television.

Also not one of my favorites, but this episode does have moments that I adore. I loved Jayne's change of heart when he saw what he was defending.....talk about turning a kid loose in a candy store. And Mal chasing the 'high-tech' bandit down on horseback. Great stuff indeed, think I'm going to pull out my 'Firefly' DVDs and give this episode another watch.
It's a decent enough episode. Nice lines and character development. Not the best episode of the series, but not the worst, either (Bushwhacked, in my mind, still holds that "honor").
This is actually the only episode of Firefly I really dislike. I've watched it about 3 or 4 times, having watched the whole series with my family and friends, and each time it's the only one I can't stand. My cousin however loves it.

P.S. I loved Bushwhacked. :)

The thing that gets me in this episode is cheesy chase scene between Mal and the bad guy. The way the bad guy misses all his shots at a steadily positioned Mal on horseback. And the way the laser shots were depicted as Star Wars like "bolts". And finally the way the laser gun conveniently (and cheesily) flashes "low battery" in a large Fischer-Price font. But this is mere nitpicking as I still enjoyed the usual character interactions and dialogue.

I second what RBB said about the comics and Brent Matthews. Which makes me wonder how much better the story would have been told had Jose Molina or Ben Edlund done the comics. And also how much input Joss himself had on the comics. And further how Brent Matthews managed to snare a major film contract with Universal. There must have been some real superlative work of his which I might have missed.

P.S. All the other so called "weak" episodes like Bushwhacked and Safe I really liked.
Yes, this is probably my least favorite episode of Firefly. Still, though, I enjoyed it. The only parts I really couldn't stand were some of the minor characters' acting and the godawful cheesy laser bolts that Rance shot at Mal, which ruined an otherwise great "horse versus technology" chase...as Donald Kaufman would put it. :-D

Still, though, we've got numerous subtle allusions to Jayne and his "pecker," the bit between Wash and Kaylee, Nandi, the love-making scene, Inara's heart-shredding breakdown, and Inara telling Mal that she's leaving the ship.

All great moments, just trapped in a not-so-great episode.
Just realized that, next week, we'll be doing the last of these weekly Firefly episode reviews, we've doing since Sci Fi Channel started to show them. Wow, the time flies.

Just wished things could be going a lot shinier for the BDM.
Yeah, but what an episode that will be. 'Objects in Space' will be an episode we can really sink our teeth into with the discussion. Looking forward to it.
Well, it was nice to see Angie Hart again.

and the introduction of Zoe's desire to have children.

(spoilers for Serenity:)

It seems strange, to me, that an episode with such noticeable character evolutions (Zoe wanting to be mother, Inara leaving...) can be considered as "weak". Not one of the best, of course, but only for those little things, and the way they are "naturally" brought within the context of the episode, I can't consider Heart of Gold as unworthy.

All the more if you had River's look as she says "Mine too" (anwsering to Inara and Simon asking each other if they ever delivered babies before) or as she asks "Who do you think is in there?"

:)

This was my least favourite episode the first time I saw it, but the more I saw it, the more it grew on me.

Besides, it has one of the funniest scenes ever.

Bwah!
Did anyone else notice that in one of the scenes when they're trying to keep the baby away from the bad guy, that the baby actually turns into a doll? a very obvious doll? Like a full on face shot of a doll? I always thought maybe it didn't get fixed because it was an un-aired ep. but it always added to the cheesy-ness of the ep. for me. Not one of my favorite episodes, but like everyone else here, I think there was some great stuff in it. And i totally went, YES mal finally gets laid! lol.
One of my favorite lines to quote is Zoe's "I'm not so afraid of losing something that I won't try havin' it" which can be applied to love of all sorts, even for TV shows that air on Fox and may get cancelled prematurely. ;)
'Heart of Gold' is a fun episode to just hang out with the characters. The overall plot is, as mentioned, Bonanza or A-Team-ish. I would rate HoG just slightly above average TV which is below average for a Mutant Enemy production. But the character development (Mal and Inara) and the smaller character moments (Wash has some great lines; Mal sizing up his opponent at the play in town) are priceless. And Belinda Clarke is great in this.
I loved Jayne in this episode (if possible, more than I normally do).

"Then the last shot I did of all of them together - there’s a shot where the entire crew of Serenity is walking up to a brothel."

This is one of my favorite shots in the whole series.
