Preorder Serenity on DVD from PlayUSA.com for $27.99 (delivered) or 15 pounds delivered for UKers. Release 20th December. Includes the great "that sparkles" (shiny) French dubbing as an extra.

Ordered mine, just hope Play are their usual reliable selves and get it to me by Christmas. Christmas post didn't seem to slow them down much last December.

Lioness, I believe so. PlayUSA wouldn't normally add something unless a studio had released the initial information about it.

I love Serenity, but can somebody tell me why two hours of a movie will cost at least as much as four disks of Firefly?

Don't get me wrong, I'll buy one for myself, but why is a single movie so expensive?

It probably won't be Chris. Thats SRP. What stores actually sell it for is WAY cheaper, more like 15 dollars or 9 dollars if you can get a discount/sale.

Chris, Amazon will probably be cheaper when it comes out. Movies are definetly overpriced. So are most cds. It all sucks. Sorry, it's raining like hell outside for like the 20th day in a row :(

I've seen a couple of rumours that Joss has said that there will be a 'special edition' DVD some time as well. Is that true?

Joss' mention is the only "special edition" word there is so far -- and it's "special" in the sense of, in theory anyway, having extra extras, such as the R. Tam Sessions, and (presuming Joss was serious about this part) a full-cast commentary.

They only list Dolby Digital 5.1. I think they should include a DTS track also. To me, DTS sounds better. Also, maybe it can be 2 disc... hehe. The video quality will be better if the special features are on another disc.

This is the first report that I've seen that region one would be released on the December 20th as well. Just checked out my dvd release sites again and still no mention though that's not unusual for a DVD still two months from release.

I'll also be buying several copies as gifts, perfect timing for Christmas. And if Joss releases a special edition later, great news IMO. I'll do as always, pick it up and donate the other to a friend.

Yikes, that's pretty expensive for a bare-bones first release...I'm gonna hold of on pre-ordering for now, just to see if it pops up cheaper elsewhere. I have bought quite a few DVDs from play in the past, and while they're not usually the cheapest, they're not terribly overpriced either, in my experience.

Ah well, I'll get it, whatever the price...but it stikes me as high, that's all.

This reminds me: has there been any word on a R2 release? (Heh, if that one's slightly different as well, I may have to buy this movie three times :-p).

While that would seem to make sense, in that why buy this when you'll definitely buy the more expensive version next year, if everyone decides to pass on this then there's a chance they won't bring out a special edition, why spend time and money on a more expensive one when noones buying the one that's already out.

Also, we need DVD sales if we want to see more of the 'verse.

Amazon.co.uk lists such a release, but with no date (and with the international poster as cover... urk!).

A few times now, I have been buying "normal DVD" and then, later on, "special DVD" of the same movie. This is not a loss since, when I do that, I generaly give away my "normal DVD" to family or friends.

It's from a Q&A that happened in Melbourne, in an exchange about the R. Tam Sessions:

JOSS: I don't think they'll make it onto the DVD. So, I'm hoping again as the movie would be such an enormous success that they'll have a second DVD, that they put 6 months later, a little bit shinier and couple more extras and it's totally cheesy but I'm for it. Then I could do the commentary with the whole cast, which is what I really wanted to do but I could never get them all in one room, we can do that.

Somebody tell me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it just be good business sense for them to realize a special edition DVD for THIS movie in particular? I mean, it has a dedicated fanbase that WILL buy it as soon as it comes out, AND will go out and get the complete collector's edition. I think we can safely predict that a special edition will come out.

We all knew right from the get go that Universal would be banking on the DVDs to make a real profit. I'd expect a couple of versions of the DVD (much like Pitch Black).

Thanks for the interview excerpt, theonetruebix. I know 'Joss is boss', but that doesn't read as a confirmation (to me, at least). Considering his statement that

Also, (not to put words in anyone's mouth) perhaps we're getting ahead of ourselves in assuming that there will be a 2nd DVD release or that this version on sale 20 December won't be a 'special edition'. Whether it's now or later, I would definitely love a special, multi-disc release but seeing as we've very limited information available to us right now it doesn't appear that we can do much more than conjecture at this point.
Universal's been good to us fans, they'll not keep us in the dark for long or end up shafting us.

I'll be buying this and an exclusive edition if one comes out. If that happens, the first one will be donated to the public library! I'm going to wait for Amazon.com to list it because they usually have very good prices and free shipping. Of course, if it comes out on Dec. 20th I'll most likely pay the shipping fee just so I can get it before Christmas! I'd love to be able to watch Serenity on Christmas Eve with my family!
