Serenity sequel? 'Just industry gossip' according to brollywood.net. Some interesting comments and perhaps an indication where this particular rumour could have originated from.

Well, I'll take more Firefly/Serenity reguardless of the medium. Theatircal release, dvd release, tv movie, I don't care. I just hope another movie gets made!
TV movie, Mini-Series, Series. The funny thing is that most fans would have chosen a series on the Sci-Fi channel over a theatrical movie and now it looks like a series is a real possibility.

Serenity: The Series.
To do a series Universal would have to spend yet more money on getting the rights off Fox.

Would love to see a TV movie or Mini-series though, in a way I wish Serenity had been a TV movie, cos if it were I'd have a copy I could watch at anytime by now.
Ghost spike--the dvd is out in NYC(dont know where ya live) it came out yesterday--the outtakes are sooo funny.if you live in the states and you know of shops that dont follow street dates--call them up!
Well, I'll take my 'verse anyways I find it. Altho, I'll be honest - another theatricle release would have been sweet! Or...may still be sweet? If we get it?
I don't know. This all still sounds fishy to me.

Guess time will tell...
Of course it is fishy, Unplugged. It's a rumour. A fun one, but still a rumour. :)

Already, thought it wasn't out till the 20th. UK here so I'm having to import, hoping it's here for Christmas.
Here's another very similar article if anyone's interested.

Personally I just want more Firefly in any form. Ideally I would have loved two more big screen films to form a nice trilogy, and then a resurrection of the series. But I'll take anything that has our beloved characters and a certain spaceship in it.
Here's to some serious hoping.
What I find most heartening about this article is that, even (or especially) if it just idle gossip -- people in the busines are BOTHERING to gossip and speculate. This means that Joss and the film are subjects of interest in the biz, and that's a very good thing. Believe me, low budget films that "tank" (to use the favorite word of trolls everywhere) don't generate that kind of discussion.

Assuming this is even partially true, I wouldn't be one surprised if Joss turned the deal down. Frankly, it would be seen as a bit of a defeat for his career at this point. Right now he has to take his shot at the big leagues and I think he may be betting, as I am, that the Serenity/Firefly buzz will continue to build over the long haul.

Frankly, I prefer he wait three or four years by which time there may be plenty of good fiscal reasons for doing a perhaps-slihgtly-larger budget "Serenity II" or an appropriately splashy mini-series with some real marketing oomph behind it. By that time, the world will have seen "Goners" and "Wonder Woman" from Joss not to mention several movies featuring the rest of the cast. (Nathan has both a horror film and romantic comedy opposite possible-superstar-to-be Keri Russell coming out.)

Frankly, it would be foolish of Joss to play his hand too early -- which is probably why Universal might have been playing this game at all...trying to get him to commit early while his price is still low. Also, of course, there's a big wide world out there of non-'verse/Buffy-related material I'ms sure he'd also like to get his hands on.

Or, he could more or less turn any TV-based reprise of the property over to Tim Minear.

Or me. I have plans. Oh yes. CSI: Ariel for starters.
Tim is currently working on selling a new (non-Firefly) series to a network.

The person who is writing this article, quite frankly, isn't entirely understanding the financial situation.

The positive of the current situation: I think Serenity is a great film, I think Joss etc did an amazing job (really).

Here's the negativity of the current situation - if you don't want to read this bit don't:

It's going to take around $37m at the box office in total now. About 55% of that on average goes to the studio, so it has pulled in around $20m for Universal. Studios generally look to make a total gross (including DVD, licensing) of two and a half times the production budget, which pins it around $100m, so it's made 20% of the money it needs to make.

If it's a fantasic DVD seller, sure, over the years it'll go into the black. But in terms of financial situation at the moment, let's be clear - I highly doubt there is a massive amount of chance of a new TV venture happening.

In my opinion, Serenity was a great movie that not enough people knew about. Kind of like a television series from a few years ago, in fact.

ETA - just wanted to say I don't think whoever wrote that article did it in bad faith - they more than certainly have heard that rumour. I'm not big into rumours like that going online, I have to admit, for the simple reason it gets peoples hopes up.

I agree with you, gossi. Rumors like this are bad for us die-hard fans. I almost didn't click on the link or the comments because I didn't want to get my hopes up.

The other argument you make, that the weak performance of Serenity makes a TV return unlikely, isn't as persuasive. It still seems likely (as the article posits) that a Sci-Fi movie would do well, in Sci-Fi Channel terms. I think Serenity has proven that there is a cult core of fans, probably enough to make a TV movie work. Serenity has lost money (though the DVD will eventually recoup the costs, at least), but why not make some money off a TV version, regardless?

Whether Joss would be available, I don't know. And Joss would have to at least exec produce for it to be what it should. (His peeps who've fluttered too far from the flame have just not done ME-quality work, in my opinion. Even if Tim were in charge of a sequel I just don't think it would be as great--and Tim totally got Firefly.)

Sort of off topic, I got my 80-ish parents to watch Firefly on DVD, and they loved it. Even so, they surprised me by going to Serenity a couple of days after it was released in the US. They loved it on the big screen, and probably didn't make all the picky comparisons to Firefly that we Browncoats do. There is zero chance that they would miss another movie or series on TV.

"Even if Tim were in charge of a sequel I just don't think it would be as great"

Why?
I'm as much of a 'fan' of Tim as I am Joss. In fact, I'd say Tim often hits the ball out of the emotional park further than Joss - if you look at season 2 and 3 of Angel, almost every episode he writes is consistantly excellent.

Of course, it took me about 6 years and a room full of 800 people to learn how to pronounce his surname.

He's also proven to work well on his own, show running and creating his own shows yada. Not enough people saw The Inside, but regardless of how anybody spins it I don't think they can call that show dumb.

As far as I know Tim's next venture is being produced by former head of Mutant Enemy Chris Buchanan, with special effects by the people who did Firefly and Serenity. He's one to watch, is Mine-ear.

I'm very eager to know what this new show is. I've loved everything he's been involved in since Angel and Firefly. I hope he doesn't have to deal with the imbeciles at Fox yet again. And I'm still hoping for The Inside on DVD.

I would completly trust a Firefly mini-series or tv movie in Tim's hands. He's one of the best.
gossi, your ringing (in mine-ear) endorsement of Tim's work is right on point. I love all seasons of the 'verse, but nothing grabs me repeatedly as much as seasons 2 and 3 of Angel, especially the episodes Tim wrote, particularly those featuring Darla.
Don't get me wrong, I do think Tim is an awesome, emotion-wringing talent! As I said, he totally got Firefly, and if I had to choose a most enjoyable episode, it would probably be Out of Gas. And he did very, very well with Angel, I agree. But after watching a number of episodes of The Inside, I felt something was missing. It was smart but lacked classic ME wit. I may be wrong, but I'm guessing that it was the lack of Joss tweaking the scripts. I need to finish watching Wonderfalls--that might change my mind. (I stopped watching the DVDs because I got sidetracked--I like the show.)

To remember how to pronounce his name, I always think "doth Minear deceive me?" ;-)

I'm a big fan of Tim, too. Maybe I'm overprotective of Firefly, and maybe I didn't give The Inside enough of a chance. I'll admit I didn't really like the premise or the characters, and I went into those first few eps with extremely high expectations.
I agree that Tim Minear is a fantastic writer and director, but I also think that Joss always adds something very special to his episodes.

That's not to say that none of the other writers do, because many of their episodes have been on a similar level as Joss's, and you also have to take into account that you are often comparing mid-season or slightly less pivotal episodes that are usually written by different members of the writing staff, whereas Joss usually writes the season finales and big special episodes, which may have a slightly bigger budget or is generally going to be more spectacular.

So I agree that there are many ex-Mutant Enemy writers who could do a great job with any future Firefly or Buffyverse related movies, if that was going to be all we'd get I'd like Joss to be involved too, if you know what I mean. I'd like him to have some level of involvement because it is ultimately his vision that has led to the creation of these shows, because Buffy was his idea, Angel was something developed between him and David Greenwalt, and Firefly with Tim Minear.
Anybody seen the welcome to the WHedonesquers update?
