Serenity kudos from New York Magazine #3 "best movie" and "best debut" - first mention about one third the way down the page...

Great to see the BDM get the recognition it deserves!
Hear, hear! Would have been nice for Nathan or Summer or Chiwetel (at least) to get a nod, too.

Also, MalContent, you have my favorite Whedonesque handle.

This is a wonderful acknowledgement of the quality of our BDM, with well-deserved kudos for our Boss. And good timing -- to help boost those DVD sales.

I was also struck by the award for the best reason to stay home -- the Unseen Cinema DVD collection of early American avant-garde film. I recently purchased the set (subsequently finding out that I could have purchased it for substantially less money direct from the distributer) to use in teaching a class, and I was totally blown away by the content and the quality of the transfers. Those interested in early film should really consider this collection -- after they've purchased, the R1, R2, and R4 versions of Serenity, of course.
Ken Tucker is probably as big a Whedon-head as any of us and definitely Joss's best known critical fan, so this isn't unexpected.

Hopefully, it'll get on at least one or two "top 10" lists by some of the other well known critics.

Yes, this really is nice. This type of thing is one of the reasons why I don't consider "Serenity" a flop at all. IMO a flop is a film that not only had mediocre numbers at the box office but had horrible reviews as well (like Gigli) and was expected to rack in big numbers. "Serenity" came out to theaters at a horrible time in the film industry where most movies aren't doing much better, with much bigger budgets and starring big name stars.

I've been thrilled all along to read all the praise that has been heaped on the BDM and Joss and truly feel that "Serenity" will be a movie, over time, that continues to build an audience and becomes a classic. Which I would much rather see than for it to have been hated by the critics but a BO hit and forgotten about soon after it leaves the theaters. Once you've seen "Serenity" you never forget about it.

Now, that's the quote that should be on the DVD cover. Someone, make it so!
Yay!

This makes me happy.
bobster, I didn't even realize Tucker had written it, but it makes perfect sense considering his history. A nicely written piece: thoughtful, detailed, and more varied than I expected from the "create a category in order to bring up a film I liked" layout.

A lot of people missed the boat on Serenity. I'd say it's got a real chance of blowing up on video a la Pitch Black or Harold and Kumar. This is my prayer.
Good call on the best poster award. I was completely floored when I got the Walk the Line poster with an issue of Empire.
