In related news, I was just been told by a Best Buy employee that Serenity DVD will be selling for a low price of $14.99 this week. That is at least in Florida where he works. Can anyone confirm?

Me, I'm getting the DVD at Wal-Mart at midnight...of course, it won't be marked down to Wal-Mart prices until the manager comes in later in the morning...but damn it...it's either I get it at midnight, or I wait until 7 PM. And I don't wanna be waiting until 7 PM.

gossi, I received mine yesterday. I didn't buy from Amazon, though. I bought it from the place that thought Dec. 2 was the release date, remember that? DVDUSA or somesuch.

No, MySerenity - the prescreenings started in May. You can directly corelate the spikes to advertising - be it trailers, TV spots, and Sci-fi airings. In April, the trailers appeared before Star Wars Episode 3, causing a spike in Firefly DVD sales.

Those who claim the advertising didn't work are simply wrong - it did work, just not well enough it appears.

I ordered one from Amazon and one from Play.com. The Play.com one arrived Friday 16th, all the way to the UK, but there's no sign of the Amazon one.

I'm of the camp that the advertising was simply insufficient. It reached out to the genre-aware people, but among non-fans, the awareness was null. I talked with only one person who knew of the movie independently of me. Compare that with the awareness of Aeon Flux -- similarly obscure source material, but Charlize Theron in a black catsuit. Even if most everybody I know who's mentioned the movie has mocked it (have not seen it, but am curious about exactly how bad it is), they know about its existence.

The jump in DVD sales bears this out: who is going to purchase a $35 DVD set of a defunct TV series in prep for a movie opening 5 months later? People who take their science fiction and entertainment seriously. Those people are a fraction of the audience needed to make a hit, or the exact amount needed for a cult hit.

Amazon has shipped my 3 orders also. It says it will arrive here Dec.22, but I paid for Priority Mail... We'll see what happens. If it doesn't arrive on Dec. 20, I'll be heading for Best Buy also.
