Serenity featured on Empire Awards nominations shortlist for best sci/fi fantasy film, and Nathan gets a nod for Best Newcomer. The results will be announced on March 13th

Right, who do I have to give my babies to for access to the award ceremony? Like, I've already packed them.
When I clicked on the link I was pleasantly surprised by an obnoxious pop-up ad for Serenity.
As you have no babies, thats just gross, gossi :)
Yup, TamaraC, I saw that pop-up ad. Usually, I'd be tres annoyed, but I just went, "Wow, that is really fucking nice."

For once, I support irritating pop-ups!
The pop-ups really tick me off--online AND on TV (anyone else put off by those stinking pop ups on TV?) but this time I was kind of happy. A ticked off kind of happy...but happy nonetheless.

Oh, and what's up with the no nominations for:
Joss Whedon - Best Director
Serenity - 'River's Bar Brawl' for Scene of the Year
Serenity - Best Film
Yeah, I also got that pop-up. I was even a bit reluctant to close it down but I sort of had to...

River's Bar Brawl is not the movie's best scene. "Space Battle" is much better and "Mal, Inara and Operative in companion house", the "they're dropping like flies" scene and well, "death of Wash" scene (so what, I like having my heart ripped out) are all better. And instead of being disappointed that Serenity wasn't nominated in more categories, let's rejoice over the ones we have. Even though the Star Wars nomination for Best Film ticks me off a bit. It will be interesting though to see who'd will win Best Sci-Fi, it's definitely a toss up between Serenity and King Kong. While King Kong obviously has a heads up on Serenity with it being being nominated for Best Film, I think we might surprise from behind.

Newcomer on the other hand should be a win for Nathan. The Narnia kids will cancel each other out, I had to check out google to realize who Kelly Reilly was in Pride & Prejudice despite that fact that I'd seen it (and now that I know who she play, it was a very good part, but rather small over all) and I've never even heard of the movie Stoned. Kelly is probably his only contender for the win but Nathan seems to be the more likely candidate at this moment.
Agreed that Serenity will probably lose to Kong. Can't beat the monkey. It could even have rough going against Potter and Narnia. Three very well-made fantasies about iconic universes/characters going against one small sci-fi movie about a Sartrean captain and a living weapon flying a rickety spaceship on the raggedy edge? Don't love the BDM's chances.

Even if this were a heads-up contest between the only two sci-fi films on the list, though, Serenity would probably not beat Star Wars. That is not meant as a commentary on the relative worth of the two films...just the taste of the movie-going public and reviewers as a whole. What can I say? If sales figures can be believed, people prefer fast food over sit-down dining, too.

Hmm. Slight UK bias methinks. 'Hitchhiker's Guide' over '40 Year Old Virgin' as best comedy ? Much as I enjoyed HHGTTG:TM it had its problems and certainly didn't give me the laughs Virgin did (it was too wry for that really tho' I was glad they didn't muck up a book i've loved for 20 years).

And for RoTS to be up for Best Film given some of the movies released in the last year is an absolute joke.

Does anyone know if this is a critic's choice award ? If the noms are voted on by the great unwashed then I don't fancy Serenity's chances in any of them but given how well it was reviewed it might snatch Best Sci-Fi and (if there's any justice) Best Newcomer for Nathan if it's down to the usually at least slightly more discerning critics.

BTW, for me there wasn't enough to Wash's death scene to even really merit the name (which I thought was part of the point, for it to be sudden and shocking and almost random) so i'd put almost any other scene from the film in there in its stead (but especially 'river vs reavers', 'space-battle' and 'OMG, it's the Wild Bunch and he's going to kill them all' ;). Of the existing noms i'd put 'a really good cloak' from Crash in over the 'car rescue' (even tho' they were both great) and 'lava fight' from RoTS just to get MacGregor's 'You were the chosen one!' line in. Think i'd leave 'Attack of the Crawlers' in for The Descent even tho' there were loads of excellent scenes in that picture (especially if you're even mildly claustrophobic).
Hmm. Slight UK bias methinks.

UK magazine with UK awards from UK reader votes. Who'd of thunk it?
True dat (yes, I am of the street), gossi, but when someone asks you what your favourite comedy of the last year was do you automatically separate them into UK and Non-UK categories and answer accordingly ? Or do you just say whichever comes to mind as funniest ?

And given that Hitchhiker's came out a lot less recently than Virgin (in the UK at least) and, therefore, is probably less prominent in folk's minds and i'd say you have actual bias (unless votes have been taken throughout the year, in which case it's skewed but not necessarily biased).

Course, it could just be my taste and more people found HHGTTG funnier and either way I doubt it's worth invading anywhere over. Well, maybe Luxembourg.
I thought HHGTTG was 'okay', but not great. 40 Year Old Virgin definitely had it's moments, but I had problems with the last act.

If Universal fly Nathan over to London for the awards, he has a good chance of winning best newcomer. Which, by the way, he deserves.

Joss shares his thoughts on Nathan.

Hey gossi, that was hilarious. is that on the DVD? or downloadable?

My double disk edition will be arriving shortly (I hope), but if that clip is not on it I will be severely disappointed.
Er, I'm getting a great big page of blank when I try that link. Is there another way to it? Muchas gracias, gossi!
Yeah, it's on the 2nd disc. Well, it's actually sniplets from the 'Film makers journey' feature, which runs for 20 minutes - well worth the money.
billz, you can save the Windows media file directly from the link by right clicking on it and choosing 'Save Target as...' (on Opera anyway, IE will probably be 'Save File as...' or similar).
Excellent! That solved it, Saje; thanks! :-)
Thanks gossi - that was sweet
Thanks for that gossi. "Dirt nap with baby Jesus" makes me giggle every time.
River's Bar Brawl is not the movie's best scene.

Ah, Djungleurban, the scenes you named are also great, but the old dancer/ex-video editor in me thinks that Bar Brawl rocks. On multiple levels.
Just so you know, I also completely dig the Dojo Training Fight scene in The Matrix, the Sword Fight between the Man in Black and Inigo in Princess Bride, EVERY number in American In Paris... : )
