Review of David Boreanaz's 'These Girls.' He wins over a reviewer who was unimpressed with his work on Angel.

edited slightly for clarity.
"Boreanaz's befuddled, in-over-his-head hunk, whose facial expressions alone are worth the price of admission."

Jeez, David pulled off lots of great comic moments in Angel. And the transitions to Angelus showed considerable chops, I thought. Don't know what this reviewer saw (or didn't) see in Angel the Series.
Maybe the reviewer was distracted by the whole supernatual/vampire thing, and couldnt see past that. Its alot easier for common folk to see "good acting" in realistic situations. Although I dunno how realistic this situation is. lol.

And just want to say thats the free weekly paper of my home-city Montreal! Yay!(actually for me its Dorval...not that anyone would know where that is....).

I think you're probably right. Slightly off-topic, but I've told my wife that Buffy could have gotten a better job than working at the Doublemeat Palace...even as a hostess at a restaurant would have been preferable...and that her taking that job was the most unrealistic part of the entire series...oh, and all the vampires and demons and Hellmouths and the rest of it all!
"her taking that job was the most unrealistic part of the entire series..."

BTVS was first and foremost a show about the horrors of adolescence. Being a hostess in a restaurant isn't half as horrible as working in fast food. Fast food duty is a horrible north american right of passage (like dodgeball and jr. high) and possibly the most realistic horror BTVS ever explored. The only way it could have been more realistic is if Buffy's fast food tour took place in season two or three when she was still in high school. However... when I was working fast food, I remember some oddball college-aged (but not college-attending) individuals who were still working at the burger joint so Buffy being there at her age is not completely unrealistic.

Ah, never make an assumption like that among Whedonesquers. I spent a couple of days in the Montreal area about two years ago with some college friends, and we ate at Chow's. Not bad Chinese. I also remember Ristorante Portovino very well, though I don't think that's in Dorval. Superb Italian.

Is this movie out yet? I haven't seen any trailers. Would certainly give it a try - for David.

Kurya - of course, you do know that some of us know where Dorval is ;-)

BAFfler - Ristorante Portovino - was there last week... Montrealer's love their "bring your own wine" restaurants!!!
I think many people fail to see the acting, and writing, skill in what they see as a fluffy vampire show. I was telling someone today about Angel trying to order a coffee and getting "You have reached ritual sacrifice. For goats press one or say 'Goats'" but without DBs reaction and the look on his face it just wasn't the same.
Hehe, cool Bafler, Chows not too far from my home, never ate there though. And coolpeace, I did realize that you would know where Dorval is;)

The thing is, unless people see it for themselves, if you attempt to describe the concept and how funny and great and interesting it is, unless the other person is a genre fan, they will just give you the blank stare. That is the curse of being a fan of genre shows. With the exception of Lost though, b/c of course common folk to like that show. Although obviously, the genre aspect of that show is not in your face, and it is a somewhat realistic setting...somewhat...
For anyone who hasn't seen the trailer or doesn't know about this movie, please see the official site.
Speaking strictly personally, and I realize I'm in the minority here, I've always considered DB one of the weakest acting links on Angel. I love the character, and did feel that he grew a lot as the show went on, but I was never overly impressed with his acting. My husband (who adores AtS, and is an actor himself, feels similarly). So it might not be just a "can't see past the genre" thing, and might have more to do with taste in acting. But great to hear that he shines in this. And I really do think he has some decent comic abilities. Just (IMO) rather limited range....
I used to agree with the reviewer's previous opinion and with acp about Mr. Boreanaz' acting range and ability. But "Bones" is really changing my mind. Maybe my issue was more with the character of Angel, particularly as Mister Broody-pants in early BtVS and AtS episodes. I hope for his sake that this movie does well so that he has more chances to show that he can act beyond the material and characters he's been given.

And its got Caroline Dhavernes in it - loved her in "Wonderfalls"!

If you live in Canada, it premieres March 10 in major ciries and then goes into wider release March 24.

If you live in the US you'll have to wait for the DVD in May.

I saw it at the Toronto Film Festival last September and it's well worth catching.
Thanks zeitgeist for the link and Ruadh for the info.
David was always great with the comedy IMHO. Also, it seems to me he relished playing Angelus and I think he showed more chops when playing him as opposed to Angel. For the most part, Angel was rather solemn and I can see how people would see that as dull. But at the same time I thought David was very convincing whenever Angel had to show compassion, most noticeably in his scenes with Faith.

I'm with CiV on Buffy's job, she wasn't exactly unskilled. I thought martial arts instructor was the most logical job for her. But then she wouldn't miserable, would she? And in S6 job one was make Buffy miserable.
