Richard Kelly on Southland Tales Comics. Film to be finished April/May, release date still TBD but sometime in the fall.

Wow, I'm actually pretty excited about all of this.

Richard Kelly is a very smart man.
Pre-ordered mine in the previous issue of Previews. Really looking forward to it. The art's different than I would've expected for something like this, but I really like it and should've figured that Kelly would do something unpredictable like hire a guy with an unconventional style.

This is either gonna turn out to be one of the best films of the year, or one of the most pretensious flops ever.

I wish I could have absolute faith in Richard Kelly due to Donnie Darko and the way he comes off in interviews, but then you've got Domino...despite having only seen that flick once and having no full knowledge of how the development of that project took place, I like to pretend the suckage of it wasn't entirely Kelly's fault since he didn't direct and the script was more than likely messed with by execs. It felt very much like a studio-controlled film.
I love Donnie Darko - the original cut. But it seems from all I've read about Kelly and all I've heard from him about the film, it seems to be a work of genius... from someone who just got lucky. The Director's Cut ruins the magic of the original. The DVD commentary (on the original) proves that Kelly had no really good instincts about what was necessary for the story to actually work - as if he feels a strong explanation is necessary for us to understand Donnie, wherein it works far stronger when the audience connects unconciously to Donnie's psychology and emotion.

One film from a filmmaker whom I don't quite trust isn't enough to get me excited about his new work.
I don't love Donnie Darko. Still, I think it's a fun trip, imaginative, and shows a cool independent streak of vision. And that slightly crazy streak, coupled with the descriptions we've been given of the new movie, plus the cast - or some of them; I'm no great fan of Scott, or Kevin Smith for that matter, - is enough to get me excited. At the least, it's not plowing the same utterly tedious furrow that is 98% of releases. Yep, it could turn out crap. But I'll go see it and give it a chance, which is more than I'd say for most other movies.
