I'm a little late to the party... sorry.
I saw Buffy in the theater, great idea, poor execution, especially Donald Sutherland's lines.
Rolled my eyes when I found out Buffy would be a TV show.
After the new Star Wars movies came out, I was pretty down on sci-fi, so I didn't have much interest in Firefly or Serenity (although some of the lines in the trailer made it very tempting).
Getting ready in the mornings, I'd watch SportsCenter, flipping over to Buffy reruns during commercials. A few months later I found myself watching Buffy and flipping over to SportsCenter during commercials.
Then I found myself wanting to check out Whedon's other stuff. That is actually a tough thing to do. Titles like Buffy, Angel, Dollhouse, etc. are almost designed to make a guy not want to watch. It's barrier of entry that a lot of guys may have a hard time crossing. I'm glad I did. I think Whedon is a gifted story teller. So good that I now actively seek out his stories.
I think The Avengers will do a lot about breaking down those barriers to his stories. I hope so, he deserves the recognition.
